The Tomb Raider Suite was officially announced at PAX East on April 22nd 2016, when the original composer of the first 3 Tomb Raider games, Nathan McCree, revealed that he wanted to write an album based on the 3 games, embellishing and extending certain tracks from the games' scores, and have them recorded by a live orchestra. These tracks were then played by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra on December 18th 2016 in Eventim Apollo Hammersmith, in an event called 'Tomb Raider Live In Concert’, with The City of London choir. The whole process was filmed for a documentary to show the recording process.
On May 26th 2017, Nathan McCree was inspired to set up a Kickstarter funding campaign in order to record an album of the extended tracks at Abbey Road Studio. The goal was to reach £160,000 and was to last 30 days - it was reached by June 23rd and went on to total £194,120 by 2,615 backers.
The first three recording sessions began on October 16th 2017 at Abbey Road Studios and two more recording sessions took place the following day. There were 12 fans (9 backers and 3 prize draw winners) in attendance of one of the 4x 3 hours recordings. Meagan Marie, community manager at Crystal Dynamics, flew in to join fans and help document the experience for those who couldn't be there.
A second 'Tomb Raider: Live in Concert' took place on Monday 17th September 2018, at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank, London. Other concerts were planned for Australia, 2 shows were being negotiated in Dubai and Saudi Arabia, another in Tenerife and a series of shows across North America. A concert at Le Grand Rex in Paris, France was confirmed to take place on October 24th 2020 but was later cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On Monday 22nd October 2018, the renewed version of the Tomb Raider 1 main theme was played on the radio station 'Classic FM'. Then on October 24th, backers were finally able to hear the extended tracks in the form of digital download, and just over a month later, the music was available on all major digital outlets and streaming services. Merchandise began being shipped out in December, starting with concert merchandise and t-shirts.
