Characters
Hillary
1962 - Hillary is good with a shotgun, keeping one in his bedroom in case of intruders. He also often sparred with Lara, showcasing his skills in Kendo. The novel of the first movie aged him as 39 in 2001. The novel of the second movie says that Hillary and his family had served the Crofts for more than a generation; he had lived in the manor longer than Lara had and knew a lot of things about it and of the Croft family. |
Bryce Turing
Bryce is a trusted friend of Lara Croft who designs and engineers Lara's weapons and equipment, sometimes even allowed to join her on her adventures. He lives outside of Croft Manor, in his trailer, but during the day he works in an office inside. He built his own robot that he called 'S.I.M.O.N' that Lara uses to practise her skills against from time to time. He has some sort of interest in video games, having gotten many hours in on flight simulators, one hundred and fifty to be precise. Not much is known about Bryce's family, except what is given in the novel of the movies and the movie companion books: he has a great aunt called Petunia, an uncle called Mort and an aunt called Tilly, who wasn't too happy when he quit university. His aunt Tilly also provides him meals on a regular basis, but he doesn’t eat them so Hillary bins them on a daily basis. When Lara’s mansion came under attack, Bryce was willing to help Lara however he had been barred in his caravan so he aided Lara by communicating to her via a headset, telling her which cars each enemy was stood by in the garage. Lara accidentally shoots the windscreen of one vehicle but the novel says that Bryce had taken the lotus out for a spin that day and didn’t park it back in the proper place; hence Lara believing that the car was in its specific spot when it wasn’t. In the novel of ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’, Bryce describes his line of work as electronics, custom work security, weaponry and repair work. In the novel of ‘Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life’, Bryce is shown to be open-minded as he believes in aliens and is willing to accept the unknown. |
Terry Sheridan
(? - 2003) Terence Patrick Sheridan was born in Scotland, and later became a Royal Marine, moving up ranks to Commander in charge. He stole some artefacts recovered in North Korea and then sold them on the black market. After betraying the Marines, he became a hired mercenary. Whilst in the Marines, he became romantically involved with Lara Croft, but when he betrayed his country, he also broke her heart. The novel fills in their past. They first met in 1998 in Chasong, North Korea. She was airlifted right by the Chinese border to try and preserve what she could of an archaeological site dating back to the Silla dynasty before Alliance bombed the location. The SAS had arranged for her rendezvous with the advance squad of marines on the ground working on pinpointing targets. The Commander was Terry. They sparred off against each other and liked that they matched each other’s skill and wit. Whilst working on burial mounds in Chasong with Terry, Lara had gotten caught by NVA soldiers. They marched her to a base camp twenty miles away, near Chosan. She was bound hand and foot and left with two guards in the tent with her and four outside. Terry was able to kill all six without making a sound and without using a gun or knife. The novel mentions that he was taught several fighting techniques, firstly trained by the Marines, then the Kon-shari, then by the Al-Hassari in Afghanistan and then his own skills whilst in his cell. In 2003, when Dr Jonathan Reiss was on the quest for Pandora's Box, Lara recruited Terry's help to stop him, but first she had to pay a lot of money to have him freed from Barla Kala prison in Kazakhstan in order to find the Shay-Ling. He had been imprisoned for 5 years. Later, Lara left him Hong Kong but he managed to follow her to Kenya. When Reiss had been killed, Terry attempted to take Pandora's Box against Lara's wishes, and as he retaliated, she shot him. |
Dr. Jonathan Reiss
(? - 2003) Jonathan was a Nobel Prize-winning scientist and the world's foremost supplier of biological weapons. He found out about the power of Pandora's Box and set out to find it in order to sell it as a biological weapon. Whilst he could use the box himself, he didn’t want to taint his good name, so he would allow others to cause chaos. He hired the Shay-Ling to steal the Orb from Lara Croft and succeeded in obtaining it. He headed to Hong Kong to decipher it, only to have it taken back by Lara. Using Bryce Turing and Hillary as leverage, he forced her to work with him to find the box. He was killed when he fell into an acid pit during a fight with Lara. Ciarán Hinds played Dr Reiss. The novel of the film fills in his back-story. At some point in his childhood, he lived on a farm. When he was seven, his family moved to Calcutta, India. He disliked the place for being “filthy” and a breeding place for germs. It was here when he first heard the local legend of a box that purged half of Alexander’s army. Reiss had won his Nobel Prize award in the 1980s when he was fresh out of university. |
Chen Lo
(? - 2003) Chen Lo was a leader of the Shay-Ling, along with his younger brother Xien. As the Shay-Ling was supposed to deliver the Orb to Dr Jonathan Reiss, he realised it's true worth and decided to bargain with him. Reiss threatened his family, saying that he would infect his wife Hai and children Shiho and Tai with a mysterious disease unless he gave him the Orb. Lara Croft is taken to Chen where he discussed selling the Orb to her, resulting in a fight. Lara took the amulet that was around his neck, and as she walked away, he attempted to shoot her, but she killed him by throwing a knife at him. |
Xien Lo
(? - 2003) Xien was the younger brother of Chen and was a member of the Shay-Ling. He killed Nicholas Petraki in the Luna Temple. He was first seen properly when he and his mercenaries found Lara Croft and Terry Sheridan trying to enter the Shay-Ling hiding place. He took them to his brother, who was later killed. He then attempted to deliver the Orb to Reiss at the Flower Pagoda on the ground, but when that failed, he was ordered to get to the roof. Once he handed the box over, Reiss shot him. |
Kosa Maasai
Kosa is a friend of Lara Croft's, based in Tanzania, Africa. In 2003, Lara got in contact with him to help her with her quest to find the location of Pandora's Box. In the novel, Kosa’s full name is Kosa Maasai as he was one of the Chieftains of the African tribe, Maasai. He was tall and elegant and had a dark sense of humour. He knew that Lara was close friends with the Petrakis. |
Gus Petraki
(? - 2003) He was divorced with two sons, Nicholas and Jimmy. He had his own salvage business and the three of them work together with a pilot called Stefano. They occasionally worked with the Croft family. The novel of the film says that during one summer at Akrotiri, Gus worked with Lara Croft’s father and Professor Marinotos, whilst she and Gus’ sons would play together. He once had thick black hair. After his divorce, he had a fling with Lara’s guardian, Miss Stehlik. Gus owned a boat called ‘Konstantinos’. They received profit after business with Natla and the Scion. He was killed when he, his sons and Lara were ambushed in the Luna Temple. |
Jimmy Petraki
(? - 2003) The youngest son of Gus Petraki. He worked with his father and his older brother Nicholas in their salvage business. Jimmy was one year younger than Nicholas. When he was eight, he spent one summer playing with Lara Croft whilst her father was on an expedition. He and his brother used to playfully harass Lara but they became the younger brothers that she never had. Jimmy is described as considered and calm and too much of a thinker. He was killed by Chen Lo, stabbed in the stomach when he, his brother and Lara were ambushed in the Luna Temple. |
Nicholas Petraki
(? - 2003) The eldest son of Gus Petraki. He worked with his father and his younger brother Jimmy in their salvage business. Nicholas was one year older than Jimmy. When he was nine, he spent one summer playing with Lara Croft whilst her father was on an expedition. He and his brother used to playfully harass Lara but they became the younger brothers that she never had. Nicholas was impatient, the opposite of his brother. His throat was slit; he was the first of the Petraki brothers to be murdered when they, along with his father and Lara, were ambushed whilst searching for the Luna Temple. |
