Dr. Mark Willard
This Scottish researcher heads up a small team for the company RX-Tech, a mining company. Whilst drilling in Antarctica, the team accidentally uncovers Polynesian statues and a wooden cross, marking the burial of Paul Caulfield. After completing some research into Paul, Willard learns of four other sailors who had come across some meteorite artefacts in the same location as he was drilling. With his interest piqued, he learnt of their last known locations: India, South Pacific Islands, USA and London, UK and dispatched a small excavation team (called Tony, Randy and Rory) to India to begin searching for the first meteorite artefact. It was here that he met Lara Croft. He 'hired' her to find the remaining pieces and meet him in Antarctica. However, Willard was well aware of their strange properties and had plans to use them to create and study a new form of evolution. FIRST APPEARANCE: First modern day FMV VOICED BY: Simon Greenall |
Randy and Rory
These two were part of a small excavation team for RX Tech, run by Dr. Willard and along with Tony, they were sent to search for a piece of a meteorite artefact. We're not sure which one is which, but Randy and Rory went ahead and they did uncover the artefact, the Infada Stone and one of them decided to use it, then causing a mudslide. Somehow, they are both killed and Lara finds their bodies levitating in the Temple Ruins. FIRST APPEARANCE: Temple Ruins |
Stephen Barr
Stephen was a sailor on upon the HMS Beagle and he kept a journal about the voyage. In one entry, Stephen wrote how he found a mystic artefact. Some of the sailors decided to go ashore to search for meat to eat. Seeing an island, they sailed over to it and headed into a cave, now known as the Meteorite Cavern. Inside, they found four meteorite artefacts inside however there were also wolves inside that chased them deeper into the cavern. Paul Caulfield was attacked and killed by a wolf. The ice began to collapse and created an avalanche, pushing the other four men out of the cavern and out to safety. They buried Paul and returned back to the Beagle with an artefact each, promising to not tell anyone anything about their brief journey. Stephen was the only survivor of those five sailors of the expedition. When he returned back to London, he superstitiously sold off his artefact after hearing that his fellow sailors had died suspiciously. FIRST APPEARANCE: FMV after completing India |
Smythe
One of the five sailors aboard of the HMS Beagle. Although he survived the little excursion and left with a piece of carved meteorite, he was later killed by tribesman when he travelled to the South Pacific islands, possibly as they feared the artefact, the Ora Dagger, and the curse that it had brought originally on Antarctica. His artefact was stolen and he was eaten, his death being celebrated annually, "The Feast of Smythe". FIRST APPEARANCE: FMV after completing India |
Paul Caulfield
1812 - 1834 Paul was a sailor aboard the HMS Beagle during Charles Darwin’s expedition. At some point on the journey, the ship stopped near the coast of Antarctica and Caulfied, along with four other sailors (Stephen Barr, Jonson, Henderson and Smythe) took a small boat to land to search for meat to eat. Whilst exploring a cavern, they discovered four Polynesian carved meteorite artefacts. Caulfield bragged about holding the fourth and final piece, leaving Stephen, ‘the master’ empty handed but he was attacked by a wolf. Stephen shot the wolf and injured it, giving him time to drag Caulfield away but the ice under their feet gave way, falling onto an ice slope and narrowly missing sharp icicles. They came to a halt outside the cavern but Caulfield had died. Stephen and the remaining sailors buried him on the island, marked his grave with a wooden cross and swore not to talk of his true cause of death, only that ‘he fell down a crevasse.’ They had unknowingly stumbled upon the Meteorite Cavern. FIRST APPEARANCE: FMV after completing India |
Australian Soldier
His air carrier crashed in the mountains of the South Pacific islands. When he woke up, he realised that he was in the jungle and although he was uncertain, he believed that it was a tribesman who was eating his leg, but it could well have been a dinosaur. Some of his fellow soldiers ran in terror whilst some disappeared mysteriously. He led the remaining men to the shore for safety, only for them to be captured by the tribesmen, kept to be sacrificed to the gods in the hilltops. When Lara Croft offered to help get him out of the village by crossing the swamp, he said that he wanted to stay put as his missing leg could catch any disease or infection. He gave her the swamp map and told her to tell any of his men that she finds to go to the north shore. He led down and Lara leaves him. FIRST APPEARANCE: Cutscene after completing 'Coastal Village' in South Pacific |
Mauki
The sixth leader of a Polynesian tribe which had settled on Antarctica. He was born without a face. This was due to the meteorite material that had been hidden under the snow, which caused mutilations. The Polynesians were terrified by this and of the storms, calling these incidents the 'Curse of Mauki'. They left their homeland behind, and the meteorite artefacts that had caused this, and settled in the South Pacific islands. Mauki's death is unknown but it is possible that he is the boss at the end of the Temple of Puna as he wears a mask to cover his disfigured face and he is wearing red robes. He quite possibly claimed the artefact that Smythe brought to the South Pacific islands and he used its powers to become a living God. FIRST APPEARANCE: Mentioned in a cutscene after completing 'Madubu Gorge' in South Pacific by the tribesman |
Tribesman
Lara meets this tribesman in a temple as he chants a ritual and she learns of why people fled Antarctica centuries ago. He also tells her about the 'Feast of Smythe' and how his tribe eat people, but luckily for her, he is currently fasting. FIRST APPEARANCE: Cutscene after completing 'Madubu Gorge' in South Pacific |
Rooftop Merc
A merc who works for Sophia Leigh in London, UK. Being a mercenary was a family job; in fact, he, his father and his grandfather have all worked for Sophia but he never asked any questions concerning her 'immortality'. Lara didn't personally kill him but she let the bell give him a tour of London's rooftops. FIRST APPEARANCE: Cutscene after completing 'Thames Wharf' in London |
Bob
Leader of the underground group 'The Damned', Bob provides refuge for those neglected by Sophia Leigh's experiments. He had applied for a lab assistant job at Sophia's cosmetics company, a job that sounded too good to be true: no past experience necessary, a good wage and accommodation included, but instead he and the multitude of people who applied found themselves locked in a floatation tank for many days in dangerous liquid which had began dissolving their skin. He had lost his face and his skin was left discoloured green. He and the other members of the Damned now rely on embalming fluid to prevent their skin from rotting. FIRST APPEARANCE: Cutscene after completing 'Aldwych' in London VOICED BY: Simon Greenall |
The Damned Member
These poor fellows are products of a failed experiment for immortality by Sophia Leigh. They now stay hidden in the Underground of London. When Lara drops in, (tee hee!) they allow her to explore their territory on the basis that she helps them retrieve some embalming fluid. Of course, whether she gets that is up to you. They will attack on the sound of gunfire. FIRST APPEARANCE: Lud's Gate |
Flamethrower
During a first time playthrough, you could easily mistake these guys as bad guys, however if you hold off from pulling the trigger, you'll see that they will take care of the mutated employees of Dr. Willard. Don't make enemies with them as they all have flamethrowers and whilst there is water around, Lara will only be able to be submerged for a short time. We don't think she wants to burn or freeze to death. FIRST APPEARANCE: RX-Tech Mines |
