LOCATION: (FMV) England – Croft Manor
(Camera pans down to the entrance of Croft Manor as Lara walks into the main hall. She picks up a note from the table and reads it in her mind.)
Miss Croft, Pardon the mess in the foyer, but a rather large shipment of antiquities arrived while you were out. I would have had the crates placed in the Gallery, but the security alarm has somehow been activated, locking the room from the inside. If this was not concerning enough, the renovators have shut off the water supply to the entire manor in order to continue construction of the pool house. On the bright side, I've located your missing journal and returned it to its appointed hiding place in your room. Faithfully in your service, Winston. (When Lara picks up the Sculpture Gear) Lara: I wonder where this goes? (When Lara picks up the wrench) Lara: I thought I’d lost this. (When Lara uses the wrench) Lara: Finally, I’ll be able to take that hot shower. (When Lara picks up the sundial gnomon) Lara: This belongs down in the garden. What’s it doing in here? (When Lara shoots one of three ropes holding up the Archer statue) Lara: I wish I hadn’t had to do that. (When Lara shoots the third of three ropes) Lara: I suppose I’ll have to order another statue. (When Lara picks up the bow) Lara: Splendid. (When Lara picks up the bucket) Lara: This could come in handy. (When Lara fills the bucket) Lara: Lovely. (When Lara puts out the fire) Lara: I do hope Winston will be able to start another fire tonight. (When Lara picks up the arrow) Lara: Ah, yes. (When Lara picks up the grapple) Lara: This should help getting into those hard-to-reach places. (When Lara opens the maze gates) Lara: This should make for a shorter return trip. (When Lara watches the diorama) Lara: What a delightfully gruesome display. (When Lara picks up the music box) Lara: Now I’m getting somewhere. (When Lara approaches the music room door) Lara: Something’s missing. (When Lara uses the music box) Lara: What a lovely tune. (When Lara resets the security lock) Lara: That’s better. (When Lara tries to open a locked door) Lara: I’ve never been fond of locked doors. (When Lara picks up the maze map) Lara: No wonder father never got lost. (When Lara picks up her pistols) Lara: Now all I need is something to shoot. (When Lara picks up her journal) Lara: I wonder if Winston read any of it? (When Lara uses the sundial) Lara: This just proves that time never stands still. (When Lara changes into a different outfit) Lara: I think I’ll slip into something else. (When Lara looks at the bookshelfs in the library and study) Lara: I’ve read all of these. (When Lara looks at her collected relics) Lara: Splendid. Lara: Such Beauty. Lara: This was quite a challenge to retrieve. Lara: Magnificent. Lara: I’m glad this didn’t get damaged. Lara: Father would have loved this. Lara: Exquisite. Lara: A stunning addition to my collection. Lara: Lovely. (When Lara reads the books in the corridor towards Lara’s bedroom) Lara: Better still, the new 50 caliber round comes witha a full metal jacket designed to maximise muzzle velocity and power to the target. Lara: While other traps have a similar closing mechanism, it was the Egyptians who perfected the savage effectiveness of the holding barbs. (When Lara reads the books in Lara’s bedroom) Lara:And Gilead knew the GEARS of his heart would never turn again as he sacrificed his one true love to save the kingdom he had fought so long to protect – The Trials of Gilead, Volume III Lara: It is only through knowing our history that we can learn from the past. Lara: Prolific evidence exists that the ancient Eskimos would carve extremely detailed ivory maps of their coastline and hunting waters. Lara: Pink is the new black. (When Lara reads the books in the corridor towards the library) Lara: But the new pharaoh was not content with all that was now his. No, Rameses the second wanted even more, he had visions of an empire so spectacular all mankind would come to marvel at its glory. Lara: ... By far the most intriguing is the legend surrounding the fabled dagger of Xian and the awesome power it wields. (When Lara reads the books in the library) Lara: Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of mineralogy would arrive at the same conclusion. Wherever this Isis stone was formed, it wasn’t on Earth. Lara: As he struggled mightily to calm himself, Gilead removed the poison ARROW from its quiver – The Trials of Gilead, Volume II Lara: With the Silk Road bringing thousands of travellers into the region annually, Delhi was soon overrun by merchants selling goods of every possible description. Lara: ... the ruins of Atlantis were lost beneath the sea when the glaciers melted some ten thousand years ago. Lara: When the Spaniards had all but wiped out the Incan empire, the remaining survivors fled to the mountains and disappeared. Legends say they retreated to the hidden city of Vilcabamba. Lara: It was here in the sixth century BC, between the Aventine and the Palatine hills, that the Circus Maximus was born. (When Lara reads the books in the study) Lara: The concept of the sundial has existed for thousands of years and it one of the earliest devices for time measurement... There’s some numbers written on the inside cover. 11.2.7. I wonder what they refer to? Lara: The roots of the banyan tree grow relentlessly and in every direction. Many of the ancient temples of Angkor have been brought down as these roots exploit the small spaces between their massive stones. Lara: And while any number of things can go wrong underground, the most dangerous aspect of spelunking is exposure to methane gases which are difficult to detect without specific equipment. Lara: The luxury liner Maria Doria has never been found, however treasure hunters the world over search endlessly for its resting place. (When Lara reads the books in the corridor towards the study) Lara: The native population of Costa Rica was ravaged by diseases brought by its conquerors and barely managed to survive to see the establishment of a capital city. Lara: By far the most important survival item one can possibly have is the will to survive. (When Lara reads the books in the main hallway) Lara: And even as their hooves shook the earth beneath him, Gilead gathered his remaining strength and drew back his BOW – The Trials of Gilead, Volume I Lara: And there he stood, assuring all within earshot of his coming victory until it was time to return to his ships. Leaving Athens to undertake his mighty task. (When Lara reads the books in the corridor towards the music room) Lara: The legend tells us that the kings of Tibet were descendents from heaven with ropes attaching them to heaven itself. When they died, a heavenly creature would pull the rope up. Lara: As Charles Kane notes in his superb history of the Iron Curtain, there were numerous historical precedents against the practicality or feasibility of the fortress system of foreign policy. (When Lara reads the books in the music room) Lara: When Lord Byron gave the Bridge of Sighs its name in the 19th century, he imagined what it must have been like for a prisoner to take one final look at the beauty of Venice, before being led to their fate in the prison below. Lara: In the summer the risk of flooding should not be discounted, as a single rainful can easily last for days; overflowing the Pirai River and threatening Santa Cruz de la Sierra and the Bolivian lowlands to the South. (When Lara reads the same book again) Lara: This book’s not very interesting. |
LOCATION: (Start of Game) (FMV) India - Calcutta - 1996
(Larson walks into the lobby of a hotel, holding a magazine. The front cover reads ‘Croft bags...Bigfoot?’ He drops it to the table.)
Larson: What’s a man got to do to get that sort of attention from you? (Lara looks up from the journal she is reading.) Lara: If that’s the sort of attention you want, Larson, you’re well on your way. Larson: Sounds like fun. But I’m only here to make an introduction. (He puts a handheld screen on the table in front of Lara.) Lara Croft, meet Jacqueline Natla, of Natla Technologies. (On screen, there is a woman sat at a desk.) Natla: Good afternoon, Miss Croft. My research department has recently turned its focus to the study of ancient artefacts. And I’m led to believe that with the right incentive, you’re just the woman to find them for me. (Natla stands up.) Lara: I’m afraid you’ve been misled. I only play for sports. Natla: (Natla wanders around her desk.) Which is precisely why I’ve come to you, Miss Croft. This is a game you’ve played before; with your Father. (She presses a button on a remote control and the screen changes to show an artefact.) You’ve both spent years searching for the Scion of Atlantis. (Lara sits forward in her seat.) All you needed was the location of Qualopec’s tomb. Lara: You’ve found Vilcabamba? Natla: How quickly can you get to Peru? (Lara begins to smile.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Peru - Mountain Cave
(Lara is stood on a mountain top. She reads in her head from her father’s journal.)
Lord Croft: Vilcabamba continues to elude us, and my insistence that we press on in spite of these failures has morale low...I suspect Jenkins to be the author of this sedition; he simply refuses to accept the possibility that Atlantis is the foundation of which all known civilisations were built. Increasingly, I find it is Lara alone who remains untainted by academic dogma and open-minded enough to see this truth. (Lara closes the journal and looks behind her to her guide. She watches as her guide climbs up a ladder. One of the remaining wrungs break under him and he scrambles to grab the ledge. Lara looks on concerned. He climbs up and looks at her.) Guide: (In Spanish) I’m sorry; I didn’t bring enough rope. Lara: Not to worry. I’ll find another way up. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Peru - Tomb of Qualopec/The Lost Valley
Lara has picked up the first piece of the Scion and swims back to the beginning of the level ‘The Lost Valley’. Larson is stood at the water’s edge.
Larson: I’d love to join you, but I forgot my trunks. Lara: (Lara climbs out of the water.) Why am I not surprised? Larson: You’ve got your job; I’ve got mine. I’ll take it from here. Lara: I hope Natla sent you here with more than that shotgun. Larson: Don’t sweat it, kitten; I prefer a more hands-on approach. (He then swings to punch Lara but she ducks. He jumps towards her and she dives out of the way. She runs back as he stands and dishes out two punches, which he avoids. He crouches and picks up some dirt to through in Lara’s face, but she slides under it and kicks him in the mouth, quickly followed by a punch, sending him to the ground. He stands and grabs his shotgun. He aims and Lara quickly disarms him, pinning him on the ground.) Lara: (She shows him the piece of artefact.) This is only one piece of the Scion; where’s the rest of it? (She puts the piece back into her backpack.) Larson: (He looks down her body.) Gimme a minute, I’m thinking. (Lara shakes him and puts a gun to his head.) Whoa! It makes no difference to me: Pierre’s probably already found his piece. Lara: Pierre Dupont? Where? Larson: Now that I don’t know. Lara: (Lara takes a moment to think.) All right. I’m convinced. (She stands up and walks over him.) Larson: (Rolls over.) Damn, you really had me going there. (He grabs his shotgun and stands. Lara jumps and kicks his head, sending him unconscious to the ground. She picks up his shotgun.) |
LOCATION: (FMV) Natla Technologies
(Lara breaks into Natla Technologies through the roof. She switches on the large seen and watches a video message from Larson to Natla.)
Larson: (He uses the camera to show Lara heading towards the Scion piece in the Tomb of Qualopec.) Looks like our girl’s pulled it off. Natla: Of course she has. Now it’s up to you. (Larson spins the camera around to show his face.) Larson: Not that I’m complaining boss, but what makes you so sure she’s not going to bring it back herself? (The game’s camera now shows Lara looking at the screen.) Natla: Lara would never part with the Scion; she’s far too obsessed with it. Just like her father. (Lara stops the video and moves on to Pierre’s video call.) Natla: (The screen shows Pierre stood outside an old building.) Ah, Monsieur Dupont, you have something to report? Pierre: Good news, Madame, your information was correct. I have located my piece of the Scion. (He picks up the camera and points it to the building on the opposite cliffside.) Voilà. It is buried under a place called (Lara pauses the video and steps closer to the screen.) Lara: St Francis Folly. |
LOCATION: (FMV) Greece - St Francis Folly
(The camera pans around the folly whilst the voice of Lord Croft speaks, explaining the next step in his search.)
Lord Croft: I’ve acquired new evidence that leads me to believe it is the Scion itself that is in some strange way, a vast library of information to rival even Alexandria. I am now convinced that, if I can obtain it, I will finally discover what happened to my beloved Amelia. (Lara climbs up the cliff seen in Pierre’s video and notices his camp fire as well as empty food cans. She crouches down and picks one of them up.) Lara: Oh, Pierre, you litter bug. (She stands, dropping the can and looks up at the large door.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Greece - St Francis Folly
(After fighting off some lionesses, Lara hears Pierre’s voice echo amongst the ruins.)
Pierre: I suppose you’re more of a dog person. Lara: Natla doesn’t honour her contracts, Pierre. I’d move on if I were you. (Lara pulls out a pistol.) Pierre: No, mademoiselle, Natla and I understand each other. I find things for her and she rewards me handsomely. (Lara begins searching for him.) But you seek the very thing she does. That is why you are not trusted. Lara: I trust my instincts. Pierre: And that is why you’re in second place. I am a professional, mademoiselle. I focus on the job, and I get paid. Lara: There’s more to life than money, Pierre. Pierre: This isn’t life, mademoiselle, it’s business. Your compulsion prevents you from seeing the difference. Lara: It hasn’t prevented me from getting a piece of the Scion. (Pierre moves into the camera’s view.) How’s business for you? (Pierre points his 50 Caliber pistols at an unknowing Lara. He chooses not to shoot her.) Pierre: Touché. So then, why don’t we see whose compulsion gets them the next piece. (He steps out of view.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Greece - Tomb of Tihocan
(Lara enters the Tomb of Tihocan, and sees the piece of Scion. She walks past it for now and heads over to Tihocan’s sarcophagus. She reads the inscription on the top.)
Lara: Here lies the God-King Tihocan; one of the Triumvirate; Keepers of the Three Pieces of the Scion; Leader of the chosen after the great betrayal caused Atlantis to be lost beneath the waves. (She pushes the lid off the top of the sarcophagus. The tomb is empty. As she is about to move, a pistol is pressed against the back of her head.) Pierre: You see? Instincts can be expensive, mademoiselle. (He has the piece of the Scion.) Yours are going to cost you both pieces of the Scion. Lara: That’s not a price I’m prepared to pay. Pierre: Don’t be absurd. No job is worth dying for. Lara: Yes. It is. (Pierre attempts to shoot Lara but she quickly ducks before he pulls the trigger, and punches him. He starts shooting and she cartwheels out of the way, emerging to grab his pistol and swipe his face with her elbow. Pierre recovers and starts shooting again, so Lara dives behind the sarcophagus. She stands up to use his pistol back on him, but he runs out the doorway. As he runs out of the tomb, the guardians that were stood either side of the entrance come to life. Pierre manages to evade their attacks as Lara runs out to the entrance. He realises that their animation to life was due to the piece of the Scion and notices Lara.) Pierre: On second thought, you have it! (He throws her the piece as the guardians watch.) Bonne chance! (He looks at the guardians, presuming that they would follow the Scion but instead they turn on him, trampling him under their hooves.) |
LOCATION: (FMV) Greece - Tomb of Tihocan
(After the battle with the tomb guardians, Lara puts the two pieces of the Scion together and is shown its history. The floor gives way beneath her and she falls until she sees large pieces of the Scion. She then sees three figures, two males and one captured female.)
Tihocan: You have tainted the power of the Scion; In betraying your fellow Kings you have broken the sacred Triumvirate of Atlantis. You have maimed Qualopec. Your own brother. Qualopec: I am still here, wretch. Tihocan has ended your treachery. But it is my face you will see in your nightmares. Tihocan: What have you to say for yourself? (Lara falls a little way to see a tomb entrance in Egypt, and then rapidly begins to fall to the ground, back at the tomb of Tihocan.) |
LOCATION: (FMV) Egypt - Sanctuary of the Scion
(Lara manages to find the final piece of the Scion and runs outside from the collapsing tomb. She puts all three together. Like the trance before, Lara is falling and she can hear a woman talking.)
Natla: But it is my face you will see in your nightmares. (The scene is clearer now, with more of the ancient setting around.) Tihocan: What have you to say for yourself? Natla: The Gods favour action, not council. Qualopec: Yet it is this council that rules over you today. Natla: You rule over nothing! Atlantis is in ruin; nothing can change that. Everything must burn. Only then can the Seventh Age begin. (Lara begins to realise herself who the woman is. She walks around the scene.) Qualopec: You choose a path to madness. I wash my hands of you. Tihocan: For your treachery; for using the knowledge of the Scion to unleash our armies against us, I expel you forever from the sacred order of The Three, and condemn you to shame in the frozen limbo of eternity. (The woman lifts her head.) Chanting: Ok sabthin, fik neprent. Nam sing praten. Rauf te nang. So tan qua lua licheon! Natla: It cannot be stopped! The wheels of Kathar are already in motion! Doom will find you both while I rise from the dust of your bones to finish what I’ve started. (Natla is then frozen. The scene changes as Lara returns back to Egypt. Natla is stood in front of her and takes the Scion from her hands. Lara goes for her pistols but finds that they have been taken. She is quickly grabbed from behind by a big man. Two men have appeared by Natla, one of them Larson, and they have her weapons.) Lara: It was you? You were the Queen of Atlantis. Natla: Once. Lara: And the Scion holds its history. Natla: It holds far more than that. All knowledge of the Ancients; things none of you could even comprehend. Lara: What is the Seventh Age? (Natla turns and stands in front of Lara.) Natla: How far are you willing to go to find out, Lara? (Lara doesn’t answer her.) Not far enough, I’m afraid. (She turns her back.) Kill her quickly. We have work to do. (She walks away. The young man points an uzi towards Lara.) Kid: I’m gonna enjoy this. (The big man pulls out a knife.) Kold: Enjoy watchin’. I’m cuttin’ her. (Lara elbows him in the stomach and punches his jaw, and jumps over Kid as he tries to shoot Lara’s feet. She kicks him in the face and turns to Larson. He tries to hit her with the butt of his shotgun and she dives out of the way. She runs for the cliff edge as Kid aims his uzis at her. Larson knocks him out of the way and aims his shotgun. His aim follows her to the edge and she dives over into the water. The men climb into the car and drive away as Lara surfaces. She climbs onto her motorbike and speeds towards a ramped cliff edge. She jumps off the vehicle and throws her grapple to Natla’s yacht. She secretly climbs aboard and hides.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Natla’s Mine, The Lost Island
(As Lara drives the drilling machine along the tracks, she notices a box has been put back on the tracks. As she stops the machine and climbs off, Larson walks into view. He stops and holds up the blue fuse with a smirk.)
Larson: Sorry, darlin’. This is the end of the line. (He pockets the fuse.) Lara: (Sighs) Just hand it over, Larson. This has nothing to do with you. Larson: What’s it got to do with you? The Scion belongs to Natla. Face it, you got no business here. Lara: I don’t have time for this. Get out of the way or you die. (Lara lifts out and aims her pistols.) Larson: What you gonna do, shoot me? (He walks towards her.) C’mon Lara; I just work here. Now I know how bad you want this, but I can’t let you pass. And we both know you’re not gonna kill me for it. (Lara begins to hesitate.) That’s just not who you are. Lara: I’m not who you think I am. (Larson’s face changes from smugness to anger, and he moves away and pulls out his shotgun. Lara shoots him three times and he falls to the ground. She stands by his side. He raises his arm to her but breathes his last breath. Lara crouches and collects the fuse from his pocket. She puts it in her backpack and looks at her hands. She quickly wipes them together and continues on to find Natla.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) The Lost Island - Natla’s Mine
(Lara enters a large, cavernous area, where the big man is stood in front of a large pyramid. She grabs her pistols.)
Kold: I was hoping you’d show up; I want to make you scream. (He touches the blade edges of his knife.) Lara: Unless you want to end up like Larson, get out of my way. Kold: It’s so good, isn’t it? It gets even better. (He slices the blade across the palm of his hand.) You can’t explain it to people; they have to feel it. (He begins to approach Lara, but the young man appears and grabs his uzis.) Kid: Girl, you gotta be out of your mind! (Lara dodges Kold’s knife, and runs away from Kid’s gunfire, shooting back. He takes cover and Lara takes aim at Kold, dropping him to the ground. Kid comes out firing and Lara rolls behind a large rock. He follows her around.) Kid: Not so hard now, are you? (Lara ambushes him and they fire at each other. Kold looks up.) Kold: She’s mine. (He stands and shoves his knife into Kid’s stomach, throwing him to the other side of the area. He runs towards Lara and she jumps over him. She tries to dodge his next attack but he grabs her throat, pinning her against a large rock. As Kold raises his knife, he is shot in the back by Kid. Lara, now free, picks up her pistols.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) The Lost Island - Final Conflict
(Lara sees the three pieces of the Scion. She looks at the large, pulsing sack in the distance and the long drop into lava.)
Natla: You’ve reached the top, Lara. There’s nowhere left to go but down. (Natla extends her wings. She has also brought with her some Atlanteans.) Lara: You’re rebuilding the army of Atlantis. Natla: This Pyramid breeds far more than the soldiers you’ve faced. With the Scion, I now have the means to create anything I desire. Lara: What is it you desire, Natla? Natla: It takes Three to rule. Tihocan and Qualopec were too weak to destroy what stands in the way of the Seventh Age. But you have the strength to claim this seat beside me. Immortality has its price. But what are a few lives to sacrifice for your dreams? Lara: This is madness. Natla: This is what you’ve been searching for. The answers you’ve sought your entire life are within the Scion; everything you’ve done has led you to this place. You’re here because you belong here, Lara. (Lara thinks through what Natla has said.) That’s who you are. Lara: I’m sorry, Father. (She shoots the pieces of the Scion.) Natla: NOOOOOOO! (She charges for Lara, knocking her over the edge. Lara throws her grapple and catches the ledge as Natla plummets into the lava. Lara climbs up and the large sack opens up. Lara now has to battle with an abomination.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) The Lost Island - Final Conflict
(Lara walks into a large, arena like area. Natla flies in from above. Her skin has been scorched.)
Natla: Thousands of years I’ve waited for this moment! Do you realize what you’ve done? (She lands and walks towards Lara.) That blood on your hands, do you believe it was spilled for the good of all man, or for your own selfish desire? Look inside yourself, Lara. Your heart is as black as mine. (A battle commences between the two. Lara manages to shoot Natla down to the ground, noticing the glowing blue spot on her back. Natla stands and grabs her throat.) Natla: I cannot die, you fool. (She throws her aside.) Sooner or later, you’ll run out of bullets. (The fight continues until Lara has drained all of Natla’s life. Lara dodges two of Natla’s attacks but is thrown aside.) Natla: What have you really accomplished here? Nothing but a temporary stay of execution for your kind. This island is just one remnant of Atlantis; I will find another. But you, Lara. You have lost everything. (Lara grabs a pistol as she dives out of the way of Natla’s fireball attack. She shoots Natla in the face, and pulls a wobbly pillar down on top of her.) Lara: No, I haven’t. (Another pillar collapses, giving Lara a way out. Outside, she dives into the water as the island explodes. Lara climbs aboard Natla’s yacht and drives it away. She looks at her hands once more and then smiles.) |
