Characters
Conrad Roth
Age: 52 Occupation: Treasure Hunter, Captain of the Endurance Conrad is from Sheffield, South Yorkshire in England. He is the Captain of the Research vessel ‘Endurance’, and enjoys rock climbing, hiking and wreck diving. After serving two combat tours with the RMC (Royal Marine Commandos) Roth left the military and put his specialized skills to use as wreck-diver and freelance treasure-hunter. Roth travelled the world, earning a reputation for toughness, competence, and a willingness to bend inconvenient laws restricting traffic in historical artefacts. Those qualities attracted the attention of wealthy private collectors including the Lord and Lady Croft, Lara’s parents. For several years, Roth accompanied Richard Croft on over a dozen treasure-hunting expeditions, acting as a guide and, when necessary, a bodyguard. When Lara’s parents went missing, he took on the duty of looking after Lara, teaching her practical skills which were a little unusual for a wealthy British heiress, such as rock climbing, navigation, and other survival skills. With her parents gone, Roth was the closest thing to family that Lara had and he took that role seriously. Roth modelled his style of leadership on that of his hero, the explorer Ernest Shackleton even going so far as to name his own ship after Shackleton’s ship. The welfare and safety of his crew was paramount to Roth and he prides himself on instinctively knowing who was going to make a good crewmember. Though he expected obedience, he treated his crew fairly, and as a result, inspired a great deal of loyalty. In everyday dealings, he is easy going, sometimes even playful. When the things get tough however, Roth inhibits a no-nonsense leadership style that brooked no arguments. He is also a hands-on leader who knows how to boost the morale of his shipmates, have fun and remain both optimistic and realistic. Roth considers himself married to the sea. He dreams of finding that one big score that will allow him to retire onto a large yacht and live out his days sailing wherever the winds will take him. Samantha Nishimura
Age: 22 Occupation: Documentary Producer / Translator Portuguese with Japanese citizenship, and English and Japanese speaking, Sam's occupation is a documentary producer/translator but she receives regular money from her rich family. Her interests are high living, clubbing, spending money, travel and adventure. Samantha is a budding documentary filmmaker and like her friend Lara Croft, she has a passion for uncovering the untold stories of the world. Samantha’s mother is a Portuguese model who was working in LA when she met Sam’s father, a media mogul from Japan. Growing up she moved a lot, not just down the street, but between continents. As a result Samantha often felt like the outsider in school and isolated, so to combat those feelings, she sought attention by being self destructive and rebelling against any authority figures in her life. Because of this, she was expelled from many of the schools she attended as well as nearly being in trouble with the authorities. Even her parents’ influence had its limits, so they enrolled her into a boarding school. This is where she met Lara Croft. Lara and Sam became great friends, strengthening each other’s weaknesses. Lara helped Sam by being a calming influence on her otherwise wild personality and Sam’s free spirit and wild streak allowed Lara to experience much more of London than just the universities and museums that she loved so much. Sam and Lara grew closer over the years and when it became time to choose a college to go to, they both decided to attend UCL (University College London). Sam studied film, specializing in documentary filmmaking. As Sam and Lara’s education at UCL was coming to a close, they had an insatiable desire to go on an adventure. Sam was quick to sign aboard the Endurance as the expedition’s film maker and translator. She believed that Lara is on to something and she wanted to be there to film it for posterity. It was Sam's uncle who funded the Endurance trip to find Yamatai and in return, wanted 60% of what they brought back. Despite her rebellious streak, Samantha has extremely expensive taste in clothes. Sam couldn’t understand why Lara refused to touch her fortune, and sometimes ribbed her about it, but she didn’t let it get in the way of their friendship. Samantha and Lara share a feeling of being out of place in the world and feed on each other’s thirst for adventure. Angus Grimaldi
Age: 60's Occupation: Helmsman Angus is 5 foot 8, Scottish and in his 60s. His interests include football, cats and Irn-Bru. He is a Helmsman and first aid officer. Grim grew up in ‘The Gorbals’ of Glasgow, Scotland, one of the toughest places in the UK. As a child he always felt a kinship with water and often built makeshift boats out of junk and taught himself to sail on the nearby river Clyde. There’s nothing about sailing and water that Grim doesn’t know, and he has sailed on all the oceans of the world, which included stints working for the Merchant Navy where he met Conrad Roth. Roth and Grim found a kinship while in the Merchant Navy where they served together on more than one mission and when Roth started running a ship of his own, Grim was his first choice of a helmsman and they stuck together after their service. They travelled the world and took any job that paid well, all of them dangerous and most of them legal. Grim and Roth saved each other’s skin on numerous occasions. Grim used to drink alcohol but gave it up after a night’s fishing when he encountered the Loch Ness and gave it “the old Glasgow Kiss”. Grim thinks that Lara Croft is a likeable enough lass, but believes that those with a privileged upbringing like hers didn’t show enough respect for the sea and its secrets. He’d follow whatever course Roth set but is worried that Lara’s plan to go deeper into the Dragon’s Triangle may prove more trouble than it is worth. Dr James Whitman
Age: 40's Occupation: Archaeologist Dr James 'Jim' Whitman, aged 43-45 and American, is a lead archaeologist, author and TV presenter. His interests are glitzy showbiz parties, book launches, dining in the best restaurants and expensive travel. Dr. Whitman studied at Harvard and was both an expert in Archaeology and Anthropology. He also took his PHD at Cambridge University in the UK and had taught at many schools around the world. However, in his last few years Whitman had moved into TV series and documentary making, becoming quite a popular presenter with a successful range of tie-in books. This made him both a golden-boy and a black-sheep to the archaeological community -the former for increasing exposure and interest in archaeology and the latter for ‘selling his soul to TV’. Dr. Whitman soon had a run of bad fortune as he emerged from a messy divorce. With the Endurance trip, he hopes that it would give him material for a new TV series and, along with Sam Nishimura’s footage; the commissioning editors would come crawling to him. Alex Weiss
Age: 22 Occupation: Ship's Engineer and Radio Technician on the Endurance Alex is a very skilled hacker and electronics geek, making a living through legally dodgy and flawed avenues, but only doing things he considers 'victimless crimes'- although his definition of this is pretty wide. His interests include hacking, specifically defacing websites for kudos or hacking online gambling sites for fun and profit; reading up about all the new tech stuff; bit-torrenting everything and gaming. He is also an avid conspiracy theorist, fascinated in alien abductions and urban legends of all sorts. Alex is the Endurance’s technician, handyman, and all-around “radio-shack genius.” Despite his impressive technical and scientific background, Alex is the most “out-there” member of the crew. Alex’s MacGyver-like talent for jury-rigging technical devices and being somewhat of a ‘machine whisperer’ is very useful to the survivors. He is a bit of genius and could probably have been enormously successful in the technology field if he applied himself properly. Alex knew this about himself and thus tended to do the very bear minimum amount of work needed to do the job and always “just squeak by” as a result. Alex is a bit of a joker, and although he is quite witty, he can be pretty crass. He also has a charming side and is more sensitive than he likes to let on. He had met Lara Croft and Sam Nishimura in college and he liked to flirt a bit with each of them, though his attentions were unrequited. He chose to join the Endurance expedition as well, getting the job on his own merits. FIRST APPEARANCE: On Shipwreck Beach in opening cutscenes VOICED BY: Andy Hoff |
Joslin Reyes
Age: 42 Occupation: Chief of Security on the Endurance Aged 42, 5 foot 8 inches in height and American, Joslin is an ex-cop turned mechanic. Her interests include being a mother to her daughter and tinkering about with engines. She is Roth’s ‘Chief of Security’ on the Endurance. Joslin ‘Jos’ Reyes grew up in one of the roughest neighbourhoods of Queens, New York. She is straight talking and no nonsense, but has a warm side she doesn’t share easily. She is also fiercely loyal and someone you really wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of. After being framed for the murder of a local gang leader, Reyes was suspended from the NYPD. Due to a natural affinity with engines, she re-trained and found work as a mechanic. Reyes and Roth have known each other for 10 years, and on occasion she worked on his ship as chief mechanic. Reyes has a daughter, Alisha, who is 14 years old, which Lara Croft discovered was the daughter of Roth. Reyes first met Roth when she laid him out with one punch while he was causing trouble in a local bar that she frequented. Roth offered her a job on the spot. She offered back up muscle for Roth on some of his less respectable deals. Onboard, she is responsible for maintaining some of the equipment, like the spear and the flare guns and diving apparatuses. She enjoys a close relationship with Roth and trusts him when it came to his crew and the job. FIRST APPEARANCE: On Shipwreck Beach in opening cutscenes VOICED BY: Tanya Alexander |
Jonah Maiava
Age: 33 Occupation: Cook and First Mate on the Endurance Jonah is 33 years old, and is a New Zealand American. On the Endurance he is the cook and general ships dogsbody. He enjoys fishing, being outside and creating new recipes. Jonah was born in New Zealand, but raised in Hawaii by his maternal grandmother. As a young man, he travelled back to his home country to serve in the army or what his Maori people call “Ngāti Tumatauenga”- Tribe of the God of War. His strength and almost preternatural ability to detect danger made him a popular member of his unit. And his ability to prepare and cook almost anything didn’t hurt either. After sustaining a bad shrapnel wound in the line of duty, Jonah was honourably discharged and went to work as a chef in his sister’s café in Ngāpuhi. While in New Zealand, Conrad Roth encountered Jonah dockside carrying four crates of seafood at once. Impressed by his strength (and later his cooking), Roth offered him a place on the Endurance. Jonah inherited a set of deep spiritual beliefs from his grandfather, a respected Māori shaman. This included a belief in spirits and other supernatural forces which often earned him good-natured ribbing from Lara Croft and the rest of the crew. He feels a growing unease as the Endurance nears the Dragon’s Triangle, but knows that the others would not listen to his warnings. Mathias
Age: Late 50's Occupation: Leader of the Solarii The antagonist of the game, Mathias was stranded on the island after the plane he was on was brought down in a powerful storm. Those who didn't die in the crash soon perished attempting to escape the island. Like Lara Croft, Mathias was a survivor. Against the odds he managed to survive on the island long enough to discover the remains of the WWII science base. After searching through the ruins for weeks, Mathias found records which detailed the strange storms in the Dragon's Triangle and a connection to the ancient kingdom of Yamatai. Mathias hatched a plan and began to unite the male survivors on the island. He was charismatic and could "predict" when storms would occur. Through a combination of fear and brutality, he formed the survivors into a fanatical quasi-religious group he called "The Solarii", dedicated to serving the spirit of the Sun Queen. FIRST APPEARANCE: In Coastal Forest VOICED BY: Robert Craighead |
Nikolai
He had been stranded on the island of Yamatai prior to the Endurance crashing in 2013, and worked with his fellow Russian survivors Vladimir and Dmitri. One of their jobs is to gather the females from other ships that had become wrecked on the island, ready for the Fire Ritual. FIRST APPEARANCE: Cavern Entrance, in cutscene showing the Ritual of Flames VOICED BY: Vladimir Kulich |
Vladimir
Within the hierarchy of the Solarii, Vlad occupied a trusted position, second only to Mathias. Like the others, he had learnt that instant obedience and a certain level of brutality was necessary for life on the island. Unlike Mathias, Vlad sees the violence as more than a means to an end, and enjoys the power it gives him. FIRST APPEARANCE: Coastal Forest, in the capture cutscene VOICED BY: Kristof Konrad |
Dmitri
He was stranded on the island of Yamatai and worked with fellow Russian survivors Vladimir and Nikolai. One of their jobs is to gather the females from other ships that had become wrecked on the island, ready for the Fire Ritual. Himiko
Himiko was a Japanese shaman Queen, also known as the Sun Queen, who ruled around 170 - 250CE. She united a fragmented Japanese empire under her rule. Her name is mentioned in historical Chinese documents, but in the game, rather than allow the ascension of the next priestess into the role of the Sun Queen, Himiko corrupted the ritual of ascension, possessed the body of the ascending priestess, and in doing so, she had discovered immortality. She then had to continually find younger priestesses when her body became too old. Whilst living, she found herself a new Priestess of the Sun, Hoshi, who she groomed with qualities needed to become a good Queen, and gave her false pretences of becoming the next Queen. On the night of the ritual, Hoshi killed herself, as she had found out what was planned for her. With her Priestess gone, there was no one else she could use who was good enough. Her body died but her soul lived a half-life. In rage, she would use the elements to draw people onto the island, trapping them there. In the book 'Tomb Raider: The Art of Survival', Himiko's profile says that the ascension ritual was interrupted in the 16th Century, causing her to be trapped.
