Tidbits

  1. In Tomb Raider 1, Pierre DuPont has an image of a naked woman on the back of his jacket. It's too pixelated to properly see it. In Tomb Raider Chronicles, it was later changed to an eagle in flight.
  2. Nathan McCree took 4 weeks to produce the music and sounds for the game.
  3. The PS1 disk of Tomb Raider can be put into a CD player and the soundtrack will play.
  4. The Monk’s voiceover that can be heard when Lara searches Natla’s office is actually Nathan McCree, the music composer. He was called in at last minute to produce the narration. In a video on his Youtube channel, Nathan said that this scene was forgotten about during the voice recordings in London, so, when Nathan returned to Core's studio, he voiced the character instead.
  5. In Lara's home by the front door, there is the Ark of the Covenant. It is a possible reference to Indiana Jones.
  6. Early beta fmv footage give a mention to Lara’s villain, Colonel Arthur Hamilton Graves, in the journal that Lara reads whilst sat cross-legged on a bed.
  7. Toby Gard created Croft Manor in 1 weekend. The exterior was influenced by the Core Design offices of 1996 and other English countryside manors.
  8. Lara Croft was initially a man called Fletcher Christian (according to Toby Gard in ‘Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness the Official Companion’) however due to similarities to Indiana Jones, he was changed to a she. This was not the only change to the lead character. Lara Croft was originally Laura Cruz, a South American woman, but the developers wanted a British woman who was of aristocracy. The name ‘Lara’ came from producer Troy Horton’s baby name book and the surname ‘Croft’ was picked from a British phone book.
  9. Beta footage shows that Lara did indeed have a plait but it was hard to render in game, so it was cut.
  10. It was planned that Lara Croft would be able to target two enemies at once, although this never made it into the game.
  11. Andrew Howe, a programmer on Tomb Raider 2 said that Lara Croft was given a huge belt buckle to cover up the polygons from Lara’s torso and hips from meeting as they would glitch and look awful.
  12. Tomb Raider was developed by 6 people and took 18 months to create.
  13. Tomb Raider 1 has been ported to iOS and Android along with Unfinished Business.
  14. According to issue 126 of the official PlayStation magazine, which announced the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the total sales of Tomb Raider 1 on all formats is approximately 7.5 million copies worldwide.
  15. There is a mummy in the ‘City of Khamoon’ that only appears in the console version and not in the PC version. He (is supposed to) appears in the room where Lara pushes a block away to enter.
  16. Susie Hamilton, the Public Relations expert at Core Design provided some of the grunts and noises (the oohs and aahs according to Jeremy Heath Smith in AOD Companion) for Lara Croft as did the level designer Heather Gibson (a few of the grunts and groans), the script writer Vicky Arnold and sounds designer Martin Iveson, although his sounds had to be edited to sound more feminine.
  17. The Lara Croft in-game model has 250 polygons.
  18. The game comprises of 15 levels and 45 secrets in total.
  19. In an early design document dated April 1996, Lara was going to be hired by a powerful syndicate; however this was changed to Jacqueline Natla.
  20. There are several goofs in the cutscene where Lara is walking with the guide to the entrance of the ‘Caves’ level. The knife in Lara’s boot can only be seen in the part where she uses. Then, after she has cut the rope and begins to fall, she has the knife in both her hand and her boot. Lastly, though not necessarily a goof, Lara cuts the rope to try and save the guide, however she simply could have let go of the rope and drop down.
  21. In the Sega Saturn version of the game, Lara cannot perform a handstand.
  22. If a spike room is filled with water, Lara can actually swim through the spikes and not take damage, as seen in the level ‘Cistern’.
  23. If the player fails to pick up the pistols in the level ‘Natla’s Mines’ and continue to complete the level, it will automatically be added into the inventory for the next level.
  24. If the player does not pick up the uzis from the skateboard kid in the level ‘Natla’s Mines’, they will automatically be added into the inventory at the beginning of the level ‘Atlantis’.
  25. Once the player completes the game, they can start a new game but it will reward the player with every gun and unlimited ammo for all weapons.
  26. In the fight with Larson at the end of the level 'Tomb of Qualopec', Larson's gun is golden in colour.
  27. Neal Boyd said that Toby Gard decided on the outfit early in development, however he himself called the turquoise colour "revolting" and wasn't sure why Toby chose it.
