Tidbits

  1. Beta sound files reveal that Lara would have had the ability to use weapons in the training level Croft Manor. There would also have been a shooting range to practice at.
  2. Beta sound files reveal that Lara would of cheered "Weee!" when using the Zipline in the training level Croft Manor.
  3. B-17 Memphis Belle is the nickname of the seaplane in the Offshore Rig. It is based on a real B-17 Memphis Belle, the Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress. The image on the side is known as a 'Petty Girl' nose art.
  4. The emblems on Lara's bomber jacket are as follows: On her left shoulder is of the USA WW II 8th Air Force. On her right shoulder is the patch of the USA WW2 Air Force 324th Bomb Squadron, featuring Bugs Bunny carrying a bomb.
  5. The sacrifice scene where Bartoli stabs himself with the Dagger uses the same background music to the sacrifice scene in Indiana Jones: The Temple of Doom, but with alterations.
  6. If you watch the cutscene with Bartoli stabbing himself with the dagger, you will notice that it does not resemble the Dagger of Xian. There is no explanation as to why the object is not the dagger, but it might have been a placeholder that was never removed.
  7. Nathan McCree took 3 months to produce the music and sounds for the game.
  8. According to Nathan McCree, the piece of music famously known as 'Venice Violins' is actually called 'Venice'.
  9. According to Nathan McCree, the piece of music that plays when Lara hops onto the snowmobile is actually called 'The Skidoo'.
  10. In the level 'Opera House', there are posters of Bartoli, imagined as a showman. The artists of Tomb Raider 2 actually based the poster on an advertisement of Harry Houdini, 'King of Cards'. Interestingly, it is Gianni Bartoli that is featured, not Marco, his son.
  11. On Bartoli's seaplane is an image of a woman. This image is based on a poster for the 1968 French Italian sci-fi film 'Barbarella'.
  12. When climbing the chandeliers in Bartoli's hideout, a piece of music called 'Vertigo' plays.
  13. The PS1 Disk of Tomb Raider 2 can be put into a CD player and the soundtrack will play.
  14. Tomb Raider 2 comprises of 18 levels and 48 secrets!
  15. The origin of the Exploding Lara Cheat may have something to do with the Nude Lara cheat. When asked about the possible cheat code that would undress Lara, the developers would give out the exploding Lara cheat.
  16. The shower scene at the end of Home Sweet Home is the developers (and Lara’s!) subtle hint that you do not need to see Lara Croft naked and that no such nude code exists!
  17. The underwater levels: ‘40 Fathoms’, ‘The Wreck of the Maria Doria’, ‘Living Quarters’ take place on an upside - down ship. When running around ‘The Deck’ however, the ship is the right way up.
  18. TR 2 has been ported to iOS and Android, including the expansion Golden Mask.
  19. Lara's 'no' and sounds of exertions were taken from Tomb Raider 1, rather than having Judith Gibbins redo them.
  20. According to issue 126 of the official Playstation magazine which announced the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the total sales of Tomb Raider 2 on all formats is approximately 8 million copies worldwide.
  21. According to issue 126 of the official Playstation magazine which announced the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara’ s model jumped from 250 polygons to 450 polygons.
  22. Surprisingly, Marco Bartoli only features in one FMV, the Jeep Chase after the level ‘Temple of Xian’. He is the driver of the jeep.
  23. In the cutscene at the end of the level Diving Area, Lara talks to Brother Chen Barkhang and she changes into a wetsuit, but in playing the level before triggering the cutscene, the clothes rail and wetsuits are not there.
  24. This is the only Tomb Raider game where Lara Croft says ah - ha! when picking up items. Crystal Dynamics added in an Easter egg in ‘Tomb Raider’ (2013) when the player picks up the final GPS of the game, the player will hear the TRA secret chime and Lara will say ‘Ah - ha!’
  25. In the ending cutscene in the level ‘The Dragon’s Lair’, you watch as Lara removes the dagger from the dragon’s body. If you look closely, the dagger is still embedded in the dragon after Lara pulls it out.
  26. PC players will notice that if they open up their inventory on the level ‘Floating Islands’ and go down into the settings menus, the controls option is actually symbolled using a PS1 controller. This is the only level that this issue happens. Objects in levels (including inventory objects) are packaged in a file called a WAD. It could be that the developers copied a PS1 WAD for those levels that included the controller or vice versa.
  27. Winston originally had no particular name but was referred to ‘Jeeves’ by Core Design during development, however fans wanted to know who he was, so he was named ‘Winston’.
  28. According to Meagan Marie’s book ’20 Years of Tomb Raider’, Nathan McCree decided to add in Winston’s flatulence problem at last minute as a joke.
  29. Lara Croft is made up of 450 polygons.
  30. When the game was released, Domino's Pizza served an oriental Lara Croft Pizza.
  31. In some versions of the level ‘Dragon’s Lair’, the Dagger of Xian can still be seen in the dragon’s chest despite Lara having pulling it out and looking at it.
  32. Nathan voiced Winston in TR2, even the flatulence, although Nathan says that this sound was not authentic.
  33. Nathan McCree and the programming team at Core tried to sneak in Winston's flatulence in Tomb Raider 2 as the testing team at Sony did not want this to feature in the game. However, the Core team were determined to add it in regardless, so they worked out that when players completed a certain move, Winston would break wind. The game was sent to the testing team at Sony and the flatulence went unnoticed. Fans were quicker than Sony to discover this unusual feature.
  34. The stone enemies in the level 'Floating Islands' can actually be weakened before they are 'wakened'. On the PS1, the player must use the grenade gun whilst a PC player can use the harpoon gun.
  35. Once the player completes the game, they can start a new game but it will reward the player with every gun and unlimited ammo for all weapons.
  36. Tomb Raider fan, Michael DT on Tomb Raider Forums, helped to create the achievements for the Tomb Raider 2 port on iOS. His name appears in the credits. He originally created a list of trophies and achievements in 2010 in response to a thread, and then ran a small unofficial competition in 2011. In a thread dedicated to the TR2 iOS game, dated 2014, he said that a fellow fan, Suizake, had sent RealTech VR his list of achievements.
  37. 'Venice Violins' took Nathan 2 days to create after having "spent a few days listening to various Venetian music from the Baroque period... primarily to Vivaldi and Bach. The piece was performed entirely on synthesizers (no samplers)".
  38. The sound effects used in the opening FMV that shows a battle between monks and an Emperor's army come from a battle scene in the movie 'Braveheart'.
