Enemies
Mummy
These guys sound as awful as they look, but they're probably wondering why they are still walking about. Bullets can't harm them but an explosive will. In some cases, when you meet them, it might be worth trying to ignore them but in later levels, they can become a nuisance. FIRST APPEARANCE: Burial Chambers |
Desert Mercenary
Hired by Von Croy to find the pieces of Horus' armour, or to prevent those who are doing the same thing, these mercenaries use blades and Uzis to attack. They have a quick turning circle too, which makes trying to get behind them tricky. One thing to do is to ambush them from behind walls. Also, the one dressed in black and red garb uses their bladed weapon to deflect bullets - you have to either turn your back to them for a short moment or holster your weapon briefly. FIRST APPEARANCE: Valley of the Kings |
Scarab Beetle
There is never just one scarab, these little things come in hoards, and they are quick and dangerous. They nibble away quickly at Lara if she stands still for too long. They will also follow her if she climbs onto ledges of certain heights. The trick here is to not stand still, but then you're tomb raiding, so you wouldn't do anyway. But, some helpful tips include: there is a section in one of the levels where you can use a fire torch to keep them at bay, and in other levels, there are pits that you can lure them into that they can't escape from. FIRST APPEARANCE: Tomb of Semerkhet |
Sphinx Bull
The Sphinx Bull is one of a few enemies that you cannot kill, but you can however lure him to open doors or smash boxes for you. He is first seen in a corridor of locked doors, where he bursts through a door and begins to chase Lara. Lead him into a grand hall and stand in front of one of the three panels. Hold your nerve as he begins to charge at Lara and leap out of the way. Hopefully, he'll head butt the panel and trigger a door to open. You'll see two of these in the level 'Underneath the Sphinx' guarding some large buttons. You can lock them in to two rooms beside the entrance of the area or avoid triggering them by not standing in the slightly sunken area in front of them. FIRST APPEARANCE: Guardian of Semerkhet |
Skeletons
These ancient warriors are pesky and you will encounter many of them in Alexandria. You can use either the Revolver or Crossbow, paired with the Laser Sight, to pop off their heads, leaving them running around aimlessly. Explosion ammo will destroy them entirely or in some areas, like the big open area in Coastal Ruins, you can just leave them. FIRST APPEARANCE: Coastal Ruins |
Elemental Wraiths
There are three types of wraith spirits - the worst is the Fire Elemental as it has the ability to set Lara alight. There's also the air wraith and an icy wraith, which can be used in one level to turn water into ice. All of them chase Lara and will nip away at her health. The air wraith can be gotten rid of by crouching next to a Horus totem. The fire wraith can be extinguished in a pool of water and interestingly, by the Icy Elemental - as seen in the level 'Guardian of Semerkhet' where Lara has to unbox an Icy Elemental to combat the Fire Elemental and thus destroying itself in the process. FIRST APPEARANCE: Catacombs |
Horseman
These guys are formidable foes, and quite daunting too. The horse isn't the threat; it's the tin man who is. He uses a shield to guard himself and swings an axe to attack. When paired with the horse that he rides, you have to first break his shield and knock him off before you can kill him. Be careful though as he will remount his horse again. Whilst he is on horseback, you will deal damage to him if you stay on the side with the axe. You can tell when your shots hit as you'll hear him grunt. FIRST APPEARANCE: The Lost Library |
Harpy
They may look and sound scary but the harpies can be easily dealt with by using a shotgun. They fire energy bolts that can do a bit of damage but they are only a nuisance in the level 'Cleopatra's Palaces' where a gold statue of Lara has been created and they can attack it, causing Lara herself to lose health. Interestingly, these critters can poison you. FIRST APPEARANCE: Pharos, Temple of Isis |
Large Guardian
There are only two of these guardians in the game and they are only seen in 'Cleopatra's Palaces', hidden away in the rooms either side of the throne. They shoot energy projectiles out off the gem at the end of their spears and they take a lot to take down, but if you are brave enough, you can avoid shooting them. The one stood on the right side as soon as you gain control doesn't seem to come to life until the first one is dead, so you only need to avoid the left one. Go to the right room first and after collecting one piece of the armour, hide behind one of the entrance way walls until the active guardian is near. Then sprint out across to the opposite room, collect the last piece of armour and then go through one of the two holes in the ground in the main room. FIRST APPEARANCE: Cleopatra's Palaces |
Giant Beetle
Not sure why this beetle is so large but it is clearly related to Set. You'll most likely hear this creature before you see it as its buzzing is quite loud, and they'll likely kill Lara by knocking her off a narrow ledge as they are flying creatures. The Revolver is very good at dealing with them. FIRST APPEARANCE: Chambers of Tulun |
Minotaur
The minotaur is a demigod, which means that you can't kill him. You can however trap him inside a nearby mosque. Disappointingly, he'll only stay trapped for a short time as the doors reopen. He'll attack by slamming his hammer onto the ground, and the reverberation from that attack will hurt Lara if she is stood too close. FIRST APPEARANCE: Chambers of Tulun |
Dragon
A creation of Set's, strategically blocking the gate into the Citadel. Without going too much into spoilers, Lara cannot kill him but there is someone around who will, so don't try taking it on and wasting ammo. Sadly, the dragon is still a dangerous foe, shooting fireballs or releasing a swarm of locusts which hunt down Lara ruthlessly. Just do your best to avoid them. FIRST APPEARANCE: Citadel Gate |
Giant Scorpion
These will also poison Lara with a sting of their tail. They move quickly, making keeping your distance a little difficult. The shotgun kills them in five or six shots, so it might be time to start using explosive ammo, or if you have enough, the Revolver. FIRST APPEARANCE: Menkaure's Pyramid |
Hawk-Headed Guardian
Similar to the Guardians in 'Cleopatra's Palaces', their staffs shoot energy bolts. These enemies are only seen a couple of times, guarding Shaft keys. Jump side to side to avoid most of the damage, using whatever weapon you feel is appropriate. FIRST APPEARANCE: Inside Menkaure's Pyramid |
Baboon
There is a 'See No Evil/Hear No Evil/ Speak No Evil' puzzle in the level 'Mastabas', where the player has to somehow pick from one of three levers to release a helpful baboon, which will pull a hard-to-reach lever for Lara. The two wrong levers will release an evil baboon (either a ghost or a black fur baboon), who will attack Lara until she 'kills' it to reset the puzzle. FIRST APPEARANCE: Mastabas |
Ammit
The Devourer of Hearts. In Egyptian myth, Ammit is present at the judgment of a person's heart after they have died. When measured against Maat's feather of truth, if it weighs heavy, the heart is fed to Ammit. This creature has the head of a crocodile, the front limbs of a lion and the bottom of a hippopotamus. In the game, she waits to see if Lara has measured out the correct amount of water. If Lara has failed, Ammit is released and she attacks. She has to be 'killed' to reset the puzzle. FIRST APPEARANCE: Temple of Horus |
Set
The bad guy in Egyptian myth. Set interrupts Lara's ritual of bringing back Horus and now walks on Earth. Set cannot be killed so don't worry about fighting him. He can fly and hover, following Lara around the chamber and will shoot energy bolts at her. Listen to the noises that he makes, he can charge up a shot that will wipe out a huge chunk of life or he will shoot short, quick shots that will just nip away at Lara. It is possible to time your jumps between his attacks to avoid taking damage. Main goal: just reach the blue beam of light as it will protect you. FIRST APPEARANCE: Temple of Horus |
