Other : Other Tomb Raider Websites
As well as the official Tomb Raider and Lara Croft websites, Eidos Interactive had a few other sites dedicated to different aspects of Tomb Raider. Below, we'll look at landing pages and portal pages. You may recognise some of these and you may find a few that you never knew existed.
Here we will be using Web Archive captures to document the history. There are also links provided in italics so that you may explore the site for yourself if you wish.

Other Tomb Raider Pages~ These are sites that promote things other than the latest game at the time. ~
Tomb Raider Index
This is the Tomb Raider home page back in1999. It was an index to various other information and items. The link we provide goes to the same site as pictured but with slightly different content. Whilst it is similar to a portal page, it only promotes the latest games and other pages that may be of interest to fans. [Link] Lara's World
Lara's World appears to exist as early as 1999. Not an individual site like some others in this list, as it is a sub section off the main TR website and off the Eidos UK website, it acted as a place to see things about Lara rather than the Tomb Raider games. It does have links to the various games but fans could also view a calendar, find demos to download and join Lara's fan club. There was even some exclusive goodies! Most of the links still work, though there are several images missing but it is still nice to experience it as fans back in the day did. [Link ] Demo Arcade
Dated to around the same time as Lara's World, going by the design, the Demo Arcade page originally only offered out demos but in 2000, it changed to the layout that you see above. Demos included TR1, TR1 Gold, TR2, TR2 Gold, TR3 and TR4. It then provided other downloads, which include videos and trailers. It is also a sub section from the main TR website but it was worthy enough to have its own aesthetics. [Link] Tomb Raider The Movie
The earliest capture for this site is in 1999. This would seem right as it is around this time that there was a lot of buzz for a Tomb Raider movie. The only way we've found that fans would've come across this page is on the Eidos UK website and then through the section for TR3 (link here though there is nothing to see). It is another sub section from the TR website but sadly it didn't get updated much. Only the 'Casting Couch' and 'Press' pages were added to, which is a shame as the other pages would've been interesting. [Link] Lara Croft Tomb Raider Movie
The first standalone website in this list, when the first Tomb Raider movie released, there obviously was going to be a website that would tell you all about it. It had the name 'TombRaiderMovie'. It came in Flash and Non-Flash versions, and needless to say, in 2021, the Flash version cannot be viewed anymore. Even the site pictured above doesn't seem to have many working links but using the Wayback Machine you can access other pages. As to be expected, the site did exist in 2000, to quench the interest from fans who wanted to see and learn all they could about the film. It provided information about the cast, crew, locations and even offered out downloads. [2000 Link] [2001 Link] Tomb Raider For Pocket PC
Created in 2002, this website promotes the copy of TR1 for PDAs. There isn't much to see anymore and some of the links don't work but you can still view the official screenshots. [Link] Tomb Raider Mobile
Not long after Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, fans could also play three new episodes of TR on their mobile phones. The image above shows a capture in October 2003 that offers links for various regions, but one earlier, August, which is the earliest, shows just the US site. The site is pretty much intact; most of the links still work and most of the images are still there. And, if you go a little forward in the web archive, you'll see that the 'Game' page does get updated with details of the two later episodes. [Link] Landing Pages~ A landing page is like the front cover to a website. It lets you know where you have 'landed' and gives you the option to enter the site for more information. ~
2000 - February
This is the earliest capture of this design. To fans, it tells you everything about the site you are going to - the latest game is TR4. The links lead to the same website, only one is in Flash and the other is still. You can't do anything with the Flash version but you can still use a lot of the links from the non-Flash version. This still version is one of the sites as seen below (1999 US), that we would call a Portal Page. [Link] 2000 - November
This landing page is the first to offer the TR site in different languages, even though some of the links go to an Eidos website. Going by the date, it was updated for the release of Tomb Raider Chronicles. The US link goes to the site directly below, the UK goes to the TR section on the Eidos Website (since tombraider.co.uk no longer exists), the German link goes to Eidos.de and the French link goes to Eidos-France.fr. [Link] 2000 - November - Tomb Raider Chronicles US Website
After following the regional options page above, US fans were greeted with this landing page, where they could choose between Flash and Non-Flash. Surprisingly, the sorts of things that you then found on the official site was no longer the same as it was for Tomb Raiders 1 to 4. Instead, it became a portal page, linking to the old sites and various other TR related pages. To learn about the then latest game by clicking on the box for Tomb Raider Chronicles, you was redirected to a page on Eidos Interactive.com before you was redirected back to TombRaider.com, or you could click the image of Lara to go straight to the TR website. [Link] Portal Pages~ These are pages that didn't include any new information but instead simply linked to other pages. ~
The Archives
Created in 1999, presumably when the TR site changed for Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, the Archives contain links to the sites of the old games. Note how TR1 isn't listed - we believe that when the site was updated in 1997 for TR2, most of those pages were deleted (or possibly overwritten) as you cannot find them today. You can still use the links on this page, though TR3 isn't there and some of the imagery is no longer there. [Link] 1999 US Portal Page
This website design existed in September 1999 but nowadays is bettered viewed in the year 2000 in the Web Archive. It has links to the sites of the previous games, plus a few links to Lara's World, Calendar, Demo and Community. In some cases, there is a Gif across the top that advertises other Eidos games, such as Fear Effect. It comes in a Flash and Non-Flash version, which could be accessed from the February 2000 landing page seen above. [Link] 2000 Capture French Portal Page
This is a good example of a portal page, as it links to pages of the first 4 games on 3 different consoles, apart from Mac as TR4 wasn't available on the Mac just yet. The links however do not link away from the site but instead have their own sections on the Eidos-France website. A quick inspection of the pages show that no matter the platform, the content remains the same. They are nice websites though, regardless of whether you speak the language or not. There is an English version of this site on EidosInteractive.co.uk but it isn't as well preserved. [Link] 2000 US Tomb Raider Chronicles Portal Page
This portal page was accessed through the November 2000 landing page seen above. Again there are Flash and Non-Flash versions. Links include the first Tomb Raider movie, the Timex website, TR3 Gold, TR4, Lara's World, Community and then one to a page where you could purchase the 'Tomb Raider: Trilogy' on Digital River. The link for the Tomb Raider Chronicles website, as mentioned above, redirects to an Eidos Interactive page, which then returns to the Tomb Raider website, or you can click the image of Lara diving to get to the TRC section. The links still work, but of course, they are dated and will not show the page as it once did. [Link] 2000 UK Tomb Raider Chronicles Portal Page
Now this is probably the most obscure of the portal pages, and you would've accessed it through the landing page seen in November 2000 and by going to the UK site. This would've led to EidosInteractive.co.uk/tombraider. You would've then been greeted by a landing page, and one of the links on it was this portal page. It contains links to the games on the Eidos Interactive website (in the same fashion as the French 2000 portal page above), background information, news, a link to the official Lara Croft website, community, 4 pages of story so far, a timeline and an archive of downloads. Sadly it didn't last long and some of the pages only ever contained 'coming soon'. [Link] |
