Story

​​The story begins with nine years old Lara Croft on a plane with her mother Amelia Croft. The plane crashes in the Himalayan Mountains and the two take shelter in a Buddhist temple. Lara comes across a stone dais and after touching the sword, she accidentally activates a portal. Amelia rushes in to pull her daughter away from it and replies back to the voices that speak to her. She pulls out the sword and is sucked into portal. 

Many years later, Lara is set on the trail of a similar stone dais in Bolivia, however when she reaches it, she finds trouble in the form of James Rutland Jr. He holds a fragment of a sword and mentions an old friend of Lara's, Amanda Evert. After battling with his mercenaries, she inspects the dais, confirming that it is the same as the one in the Himalayas and that there are more than one. She decides to return to a tomb in Paraiso in Peru to see if Amanda did really die there years ago, meeting up with old friend Anaya. ​

There is a flashback of Lara joining Amanda on an archaeological dig, where an Unknown Entity is killing the rest of the team. Panicked, Amanda pulls a stone out of the temple's wall and ends up entrapping the entity into it. The temple begins to collapse around them and Lara and Amanda begin to run, but the ceiling of the tomb falls from above and traps Amanda's foot. The temple begins to fill with water. Lara holds the only gate open as she waits for her to free her foot but more stones fall, blocking her in. Lara can't wait any longer and needs to surface to get more air, leaving her friend behind, whom she presumes is now dead. Modern day and after making her way back into the tomb, Lara finds Amanda's shoe, showing that she made it out alive. Further in she finds a replica sword fragment. She remembers that she had seen another piece before, before it was stolen by Yakuza Kumicho Shogo Takamoto. She arranges a meeting with him in a nightclub owned by her friend Toru Nishimura in Japan. Takamoto refuses to hand over the piece and escapes. Lara follows him to his business tower and fights him, taking the sword fragment from him and escaping on the helicopter of Nishimura's. Zip had located Rutland in Ghana so Lara sets off after him. She follows in her parents’ footsteps as she wanders through a temple, and finds Rutland in a large room. He mentions a Ghalali Key that will reassemble the sword fragments. Lara battles him for the piece of sword that he has, soon learning that Amanda had gone to Croft Manor looking for the key. She then went to an abandoned laboratory in Kazakhstan to look for another piece so Lara follows her. 

Lara fights off more of Rutland’s mercenaries to make it inside the old lab, and discovers that experiments were conducted on the sword piece kept here. She finds Amanda and soon battles her tamed Unknown Entity, claiming the sword fragment. Whilst in Kazakhstan, Lara found an old shield that presumably belonged to Lancelot. On the back was a map, which pointed to Lara's next location - Cornwall in England. ​

In England, Lara stops off at a derelict King Arthur museum that claimed to be built over King Arthur's tomb. Over time, the claim was disputed; however she soon discovers the real tomb and collects the next fragment. Back at home, Lara finds that she had seen the Ghalali Key once before in her life- her mother was given it by her father when she lost her brooch in Ghana. ​

She goes back to Nepal to find the plane wreckage she had survived years ago. She finds the Key but decides to revisit the spot in the temple where her mother disappeared. Inside, she reforged Excalibur and tries to use it on the dais, however it fails and she has to quickly leave as the temple begins to collapse. ​

Lara then revisits the dais in Bolivia, only to find Rutland and Amanda already there and waiting. She battles with Rutland's men and then Amanda, who used the Wraith Stone to transform herself with the Unknown Entity. Defeating her, Lara uses Excalibur in the dais and she sees her mother in the glow of the portal. As she begins talking to her, she soon realises that what her mother had heard back in that temple was this very conversation. She tries her best to tell her mother not to touch the sword but Amanda yells to Lara that it will explode unless she removes it. Her mother, as she did years before, removes the sword on her side, causing the dais in Bolivia to explode. It was Amanda's words that had caused her mother to disappear through the portal and Lara demands her to tell her where she went. Amanda says that she is in Avalon, where she wanted to go. Lara, still furious, knocks her unconscious and leaves, telling Alister to go to the British Museum and Zip to call Professor Eddington at the Cavendish Laboratory to arrange a meeting.
