LOCATION: (Cut scene) Tibet –Himalayas (flash back to 9 years old Lara)
Lara: (She is sat on her mother’s knee whilst looking at her drawings in her diary. They are in a private jet) Just because no one’s ever caught one doesn’t mean they’re not real.
Amelia: That is very true, but perhaps they don’t wish to be found. I’ve heard they’re rather fierce. Lara: Yeti only look fierce. They probably don’t like being so cold all the time. I shouldn’t like it either. Amelia: You never have to be cold, my Lara, if you don’t want to be. (She kisses her daughter’s head.) Lara: (She spots fire through one of the windows) Look! (She and her mother are bounced out of their seats.) Amelia: Henry! What happened? Henry: Lady Croft! Please stay seated! Co-Pilot: Mayday, mayday... this is Bravo Tango Two Two niner... We’ve lost our portside engine... trying to get crossfeeds open... Lara: (Amelia pulls Lara into a seat and fastens her in. Lara looks to her) Are we going to crash? Co-Pilot:... Starboard engine non-responsive... Amelia: (Falls into a chair and narrowly avoids some luggage flying towards her) Not unless it’s absolutely necessary. Co-Pilot:... Stabilizer jammed... kicking rudder, losing altitude... Henry: We’re going full nose down... Amelia: Close your eyes, darling. Lara: I don’t want to close my eyes. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Bolivia
(Camera pans around a cliff side and Lara is climbing to her destination)
Zip: You know, I think you forgot your climbing gear on purpose. Lara: What would give you that idea? (She jumps up and then back to a handhold but it collapses and she grabs the one below) Really Zip, it’s like going up a set of stairs, only far less boring. Zip: Yeah, well, I want to throw up every time you look down... Hey, Alister’s back. Grab a headset. Lara: Back so soon... from Florence, wasn’t it? Alister: Decided on Genoa at the last minute. My dissertation will never see daylight at this rate, but never mind that, what are you doing in Bolivia? Lara: (She jumps for a ledge and hand stands up to land) Ascending. Alister, meet Tiwanaku. She’s a lovely pre-Incan civilisation, currently in ruins. Alister: Delighted. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
Lara: I’ve been looking for certain artifacts... well, for some time now; and an old friend working in La Paz has tipped me off about a rather promising rumour.
Alister: What sort of artifacts? Lara: An ornate stone dais, among other things. Zip: A big rock. And she won’t say why. Lara: Where would the suspense be otherwise? |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Bolivia
Lara: (She emerges from a pool of water) Ah... that was lovely.
Zip: Hey, do me a favour and check your PDA? Lara: It still works, if that’s what you’re wondering. Zip: Cool – they said it was waterproof. You should be able to swim with it no problem. Unless you eat it. Then you’ll have to wait an hour. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara grabs a rope.)
Alister: The video is going to make me sick if you keep on swinging, Lara. Lara: Look away from the screen, then. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara shimmeys around on a cliff face.)
Zip: Careful... Lara: Deep breaths Zip. This will be a long trip, otherwise. Zip: I forgot you were such an optimist. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(A large boulder passes Lara)
Zip: That was too close. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara grabs a rock edge and sees a mercenary. She ducks and hides.)
Merc: Copy that. I’m here but I don’t see no climber. Yeah, well, I can’t shoot on sight if I can’t see nobody. I got worked up thinking I’d get to put someone down today – and now there’s nothing – he owes me one. (Lara climbs up.) Merc: Hell yeah, I’ll tell Rutland myself, you know it – give him the radio. It’s snipe hunt anyhow. You saw the cliffs below the LZ – no way someone free-climbed that. Ask Sanchez. Nobody’s out here but the idiot twins upstream, so I’m putting down anything that moves. Yeah tell ‘em both to stay put or they’re going home in a box- I’m not gonna be checking no I.Ds. I’m not letting anything get past- tell him how much. Or tell that freaky chick with him. What’s her story? I sure wouldn’t mind- Copy that. Check back in twenty. (Lara kills the mercenary.) Alister: Any idea who he is or who he works for? Lara: I haven’t the foggiest. He’s deliberately unremarkable. Alister: Is that good or bad? Lara: It’s deliberate, which isn’t good. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara creeps in on two mercenaries talking.)
Merc 1: Swear to god. Merc 2: So what? It jumped out and started swinging? Merc 1: Nah, sort of danced around. Screaming or yelling whatever. Merc 2: Yeah? Well, I would’ve kicked the hell out of it. Merc 1: Yeah, whatever man. Came flying at me screaming monkey-talk like that and I just did the first thing that popped into my head. Just bam, flicked it right between the eyes. Merc 2: And it started smoking it? Merc 1: That’s what it wanted. Monkeys get hooked on ‘em, go crazy when they see you smoking. Funniest damned thing I’ve ever seen. Merc 2: Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it. Merc 1: Swear to God. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Bolivia
Lara: (She approaches the Bolivian temple and takes out her binoculars.) Isn’t she beautiful? I’m falling in love all over again.
Zip: You say that to all the ruins. Lara: I’m a terribly lucky girl. (Her binoculars turn towards the helicopter in the sky) And here come the bloody tourists to spoil it all. Zip: You cam doesn’t pick up detail that small. What do you see? Lara: Men with guns. Mercenaries, by the look of them. Alister: What’re they doing there? Lara: Getting into trouble. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Bolivia
(Lara approaches the temple opening and dodges a few bullets from mercenaries but they run into the temple and fall in to the trap floor. Lara puts her pistols away.)
Zip: Ow. That sounded permanent. Lara: Death by irony is always painful. Amateurs. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara grapples over a trap floor)
Zip: Lara! (She makes it to the other side.) Glad you’re on your toes. Lara: It’s a useful survival skill. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara approaches a set of weights and chains.)
Zip: What’s all this stuff for? Alister: Moving heavy materials deeper into the mountain, probably – sometimes ancient builders had to tunnel around hard rock deposits. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara attacks a jaguar)
Zip: Is that a jaguar? Alister: Why predators attack prey larger than themselves is a mystery. Lara: And a pity. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara approaches a crate)
Alister: Is that a skull of a monkey or a person? Zip: Spooky. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara uses a crate to move through the moving walls.)
Alister: Ah! Cunning. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Bolivia
(As Lara enters a large chamber with moving gears, a door ahead closes.)
Zip: Looks like you’re going forward. Alister: Yes, but how? Lara: With patience and persistence. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
Lara: (after killing a second jaguar) Someone picked an unfortunate place to hunt.
|
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Bolivia
(As all boxes are on their respective pressure pads, the gears start moving and the main door opens)
Zip: Man, this place is weird and complicated. Alister: It probably wasn’t so back when it was fully furnished. We’re looking at the striped down version of what’s left a thousand years later. |
LOCATION: (Quick Time Event) South America –Bolivia
Zip: Oh damn! Move! Move!
(Lara survives) Zip: You in one piece? Lara: And still breathing, yes. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Bolivia
(Lara swings across spiked bars.)
Zip: It’s the centre of the evil coat rack empire. Alister: None of this appears in any of the literature, but I’d say they’re ceremonial in nature. Lara: If that’s the case, it’s not a ceremony I’m keen on witnessing. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Bolivia
(Lara zooms in a dias that is surrounded by mercs. The dias looks familiar to her. The scene flashes back to a memory. Lara is contemplating touching a sword in a dias.)
Amelia: Lara, have you found anything for the fire? (She sees Lara with a moving mechanism.) Lara? What are you... (She gasps and drags her daughter away.) No, get back! Good Lord, what is it? Lara: There’s something in the light. Amelia: Stay here. (She approaches it.) What... who are you? Voice 1: Mother, it’s Lara, your daughter. Amelia: What? What about my daughter? Voice 1: Don’t touch the sword. Amelia: You stay away from her! She meant no harm. Voice 2: Take out the sword! Voice 1: What? No! Mother, Mother listen to me... Lara: What’s happening, mother? Who’s there? Voice 2: It’ll explode unless you pull out the sword! Amelia: Oh, god, no! Lara: Mother? Mother! (The sounds of bullets shakes Lara from her thoughts and she draws her weapons.) Rutland: Hold your fire! Lara Croft! I’ve been hoping I’d get to meet you. At ease. We’re just going to talk. (He crosses the bridge.) Lara: (She meets him half way) I’m listening. Rutland: Maybe you found a piece of this? Is this what led you here? Lara: Where did you find that? Rutland: It doesn’t matter. What’s important is what it does. Do you know? Lara: What I know is my business. Rutland: So you don’t, then. And that means you don’t have a piece. Amanda said you were sloppy. You should’ve paid more attention in Paraiso. Lara: Amanda? Amanda is dead. What the hell do you know about Paraiso? Rutland: (to merc) We’re done talking. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Bolivia
Lara: (Marvels the stone dais) There is more than one. Father, you were right.
Zip: What was that? Lara: Keep yourselves caffeinated, lads. We’ve some work ahead of us. Zip: Means we’re still alive. Can’t complain about that. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Peru – Paraiso
Lara: (notices that doors and shutters are closing upon her arrival.) They don’t seem quite so keen on visitors these days.
Zip: Well hey, you’re the one with the guns. Lara: You can’t blame me for knowing how to accessorise. Any word from Anaya? Zip: She said she’d meet you at the statue in the marketplace. Lara: At least we’ll have our privacy. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Peru – Paraiso – Marketplace
(Lara approaches her friend.)
Anaya: Hello Lara. You realise that the streets were not deserted a moment ago. Lara: And I’ve been trying so hard to blend in. I hope I’m the one who frightens them and not something else. Anaya: There’s nothing here; just a heap of pottery shards... littered with the bodies of old friends. (She turns and walks away.) If I knew this was where it would lead, I would never have told you about Bolivia. Lara: Yet here you are. Anaya: La Paz is not so far away. Lara: Neither is the past. (They hear a truck coming and they turn to look for the noise.) Anaya: Lara! Lara: Go! I’ll catch up! (She starts firing.) Zip, get Anaya on her cell, tell her I’ll find her when I’ve sorted out this lot. Zip: You got it. (After a fight, Lara reaches a motorbike.) Zip: Anaya called on her cell. She’s got mercenaries after her. Lara: Tell her I’m on my way. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso – Bike Ride
(Lara jumps over a ramp.)
Zip: Yeah, catch some air! (Lara blows up a canister.) Zip: Yeah, Lara! Bomb your way through! (Lara spots a merc on a bike.) Zip: There’s the first one. (Lara uses a ramp to jump over a merc.) Zip: That’s right! Fly over those bastards! (Lara is near an explosion.) Zip: Whoa- watch out! Lara: (She spots a burning bridge ahead.) They blew up the bridge! Zip: Punch it, Lara! Whoooo hoooo! Yeah! All right! (Lara uses a ramp.) Zip: Yeah, baby! Do that again! (Lara kills an enemy.) Zip: All right! (Lara approaches three trucks which are purposely blocking the road.) Zip: Now what? How’re you going to get to her? (If Lara drives near the trucks.) Zip: Punch it, Lara! Zip: Truck to truck? Man, be careful! |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Peru – Paraiso (Including flashback)
(Anaya and Lara exit the vehicle and look down at the excavation site.)
Anaya: It hasn’t changed much. What are a few years, after all, when stacked atop thousands more? There’s something I didn’t tell you before. I think Amanda might not have died down there. Anaya: Is that what this is about? Closure? Lara: Isn’t that what it’s all about? Why we dig up the past? To understand it. Anaya: I am an engineer, Lara. I build for the future; I don’t dwell in the past. Lara: You will someday. Eventually, everyone does. (The camera zooms in at the digsite.) Amanda: Lara! Get down here, you slacker! Jason says we’re about to break through! Lara: In a minute, Amanda. We have some structural concerns... Amanda: Would you just get down here?! (Lara climbs down the rope and the rope snaps.) Amanda: Did the rope break? Looks like we’ve lost the lights. I hope you brought flares. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso (Flashback)
Amanda: The planks over the sinkhole broke, so you’re gonna have to swing across... You’re lagging!
Lara: You’re such a tourist! Amanda: Eva! Lara: What’s happening?! Amanda! (Rocks collapse in front of her) Amanda! Can you hear me?! Amanda! Lara: (She enters a room and sees a body on the ground.) Oh, Sarah... Oh god... What’s happened? Lara: (She enters another room and hears a male voice calling her.) My god! Kent: Lara?! Over here! Lara: Kent? What’s going on- Kent: It killed Oscar! Lara: What did- Kent: I don’t know! I don’t know! I didn’t see! This gate won’t budge! Get me out! Lara: It’s all right. What- Kent: There’s a hole above me. You’ve got to get me out! Hurry! We’ve got to get out of here! Kent: It’s coming! Damn it, Lara! Lara: I’m almost there! Kent: Hey, I think I see a light! Lara: Stay there, Kent – I’m coming down. Kent: Amanda? Amanda! Amanda: Kent?! Kent: (He turns to Lara) It’s her! (He runs off) Lara: Wait! Kent! (She watches him get eaten by an entity.) Kent! (She turns and runs.) (After fleeing the entity.) Amanda: Lara! Jason’s dead! Everybody’s dead! Lara: There’s something... I don’t, I don’t know what it is. I only saw- Amanda: (Looks to her right) Ah! No! (She flees.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Peru – Paraiso (flashback)
Lara: Amanda!
Amanda: I think this stone unlocks the door. Lara: I don’t like it. Are you sure you’re reading it properly? Amanda: That thing is coming! You have a better idea? Lara: The door might be trapped. Amanda: We’re trapped... Ah! Oh god! (Amanda turns and attempts to pull out the stone. Lara turns and sees the Entity charging at her. It disappears before it attacks her as Amanda finally removes the stone. They look at each other as the room starts to shake.) Lara: Amanda, run! (She manages to escape but Amanda is trapped.) Amanda! (She manages to grab the closing gate but the room fills with water. Lara has no choice but to flee.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Peru – Paraiso
Anaya: To be perfectly honest, I think this is a terrible idea. Everyone agreed to leave things as they were.
Lara: I will as much as I can. But from what Rutland said, I’m sure there’s a clue down there about what killed my mother. I have to go back. Anaya: There’s no use trying to enter at the same point. It’s caved in. Lara: The river had to get in there somehow. Anaya: I’ll leave you to figure out the how. I can’t go down there. I’m sorry. Lara: It’s fine. Really. If there’s any trouble, call Zip, and he’ll patch you through. Don’t take any chances; I’m not losing any more of my friends. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso
Zip: So how you getting in?
Lara: The same way as the water, I hope. If you get a call from Anaya, patch her through straight away. I’m a little concerned about leaving her by herself. Zip: I’ll keep her company. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso
(Inside the dig site, Lara removes the water.)
Zip: Is that what I think it is? Alister: It’s called an anachronism. Lara: It was Amanda’s. Zip: Hightops don’t fall off your feet that easy. Lara: It’s been unlaced... I never imagined she could have survived. Alister: She still might not have. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso
Lara: (Approaches an engraved wall) It tells the story of the last Queen of Tiwanaku. Her father was king, but she was lost and raised by a warrior. She became queen after a shaman named Tunupa discovered her royal heritage.
Alister: Tunupa is another name for Viracocha, their god of creation. Lara: The shaman brought her to Lake Titicaca where she borrowed his staff, an object of great power. Alister: According to myth, Viracocha originally lived in the lake. Zip: The god of indoor plumbing. Lara: She led her people into an era of peace. After many years of wise and just rule, there was some sort of power struggle. She died shortly thereafter, and she was carried off in a boat to Paradise. Alister: Remind you of something? Lara: The King Arthur myth. Yes, the similarities are striking. Zip: King Arthur? A little help here. Lara: It’s the same story. A youth unaware of his royal blood rises from obscurity to become a wise king with the help of a friendly wizard and his magical staff or sword, and afterwards he’s transported to paradise. Alister: Many cultures share similar legends, the Great flood, for example. Everyone’s got that one, too. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso
(The floor under Lara’s feet is crumbling.)
Zip: Lara! Get out of there! Alister: Phew... Nice footwork. Lara: Why, thank you. Zip: Might be a good place to use the RAD mode of you binoculars. Lara: You could be right. (Lara pulls down a pillar to use the boulder on top.) Zip: Aw, I liked that one. Lara: It was nice, but it was in the way. (Lara puts a boulder on a pressure pad and the stone works open up.) Alister: Wow! Zip: That must have impressed the villagers back then. Lara: I know it impresses me. Lara: (completes the puzzle.) The queen’s shaman. A dais with a sword set into it, or in this case Viracocha’s staff. This is it. Alister: Do you believe it’s the same one we saw in Tiwanaku? Lara: There’s more than just one dais, but possibly. Zip: So the Shaman would be Merlin, and the staff would be whatever the hell King Arthur’s sword was called. Alister: It’s called coincidence. Zip: Funny name for a sword. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Peru – Paraiso
Lara: (Looks up at a figure) Look at her. She’s beautiful. We were so close before, so close...
Alister: Wonderful, Lara. Lara: Do you notice anything familiar about her sword? Zip: That’s what Rutland was holding. Lara: Except this is just a ceremonial copy. And what do we have here? The tip has broken off... My god, I had no idea it looked like this. I’ve seen this before, at Waseda University in Japan, but I had no idea it had anything to do with these artifacts. Zip: Hell, I’ll get a hold of them right now. Lara: It’s not there anymore. It was stolen by Shogo Takamoto. Zip: Takamoto?! Yakuza is nothing to mess with, Lara. Lara: I don’t care, Zip. I want that piece. Arrange a meeting. Arrange a meeting. Zip: Okay, but- Hang on, I got Anaya calling on her cell. I’m patching her through. Anaya: Lara? Lara, can you hear me?! Those bastards from town are here and they’re coming down after you! Lara: Well, this is a tomb. I’ll make them feel at home. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso
Zip: Sorry, I wasn’t keeping track of Anaya. I got distracted, but she seems safe for now.
Lara: It’s all right. Just let me know if our mercenary friends get any closer to her. Zip: Got it. Alister: How will you make it back with the floor missing? Lara: I suppose I’ll have to take the high road back. |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso
Merc 1: Think she fell down there? Maybe we got lucky.
Merc 2: I haven’t had any luck today. Merc 1: How’s the knee? Merc 2: How’s my ass! Merc 1: I wasn’t the one who tripped. Merc 2: And I wasn’t the one who couldn’t hold on to the damn rope! Merc 1: It was wet! I don’t know how the hell she got down here without a rope, over all those slippery rocks and- (Lara kills them and moves on.) Merc 3: I’m getting nothing from either of them. Merc 4: Maybe their radios are off. Merc 3: Maybe they’re sleeping. Maybe they’re taking a dirt nap! Merc 4: Go find out. Merc 3: What about you? Merc 4: Just do it, Miller, and stop whining for once! |
LOCATION: (In Game) South America –Peru – Paraiso
Merc 5: Seen a panther, I think. Hard to tell.
Merc 6: Jaguar. They don’t have panthers down here. Merc 5: Jaguar, then. Whatever, I saw a damned spider big as your hand, too. Merc 6: Tarantula. You grow up in a cardboard box or something? Merc 5: Excuse me for not knowing all these scientific names, all right. I know what matters. Just watch for any bad news, all right, Einstein? It that Croft woman somehow makes it up here, that big brain of yours is going to end up soaking into the ground. Merc 6: Like hell. Lara: (She makes her presence known and kills the merc.) Zip, have you still got Anaya on the other line? Zip: Yeah. Lara: Tell her to get under the jeep - Someone’s coming! |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) South America –Peru – Paraiso
(Lara kills the said mercenary and then heads up to Anaya.)
Anaya: I hope you found what you were looking for because I am never coming here again. Lara: (Shows Anaya the trainer) I was right. This is all she left behind. Anaya: She got out and didn’t tell us? Why has she been hiding all these years? Lara: Maybe not hiding, exactly – just not keeping in touch with old friends. Perhaps she found or learned something down there that she wanted to keep to herself. Zip, did you speak to Takamoto? Zip: Eventually. He didn’t want to see you, so I reminded him how much you hate the word no. Lara: I’m a horrible conversationalist. I trust he wants to get together on neutral ground? Zip: You’ll love this. He wants to meet you at Toru Nishimura’s offices across the street from his penthouse. Lara: Nishimura? Takamoto doesn’t know we’re friends? Zip: Nope. All he knows is Nishimura’s hosting a corporate party tomorrow night and you’ll meet him there. Lara: Better and better. All right, then. I’m heading there straight away. I’ll need to find something to wear, though... |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Japan – Nishimura’s Offices
Zip: What exactly happened last time you and Takamoto got together?
Lara: He was trying to pass off forged relics from the Asuka Period, and conventional reason doesn’t work with Yakuza. Zip: But you let him go. Lara: And now we’re going to have a useful conversation. It’s turned out quite nicely. Zip: Lara, got a call from Nishimura. He’s in his office, so he won’t be mingling. The bartender’ll hook you up with him, though. Lara: Ever predictable. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Japan – Nishimura’s Offices
Lara: (She approaches the bar.) Good evening. I believe Nishimura-san is expecting me.
Bartender: Ah Lady Croft. He is in his office, down the hall behind you. I will let him know you’re coming. Lara: Thank you. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Japan – Nishimura’s Offices
(Lara enters Nishimura’s office.)
Nishimura: Welcome Lara. You have been enjoying my little party? Lara: I’m enjoying it very much, Nishimura. (Translated from Japanese) When Takamoto arrives, however, it may cause you some inconvenience. Nishimura: Take care. He is a very dangerous man when his interests differ from yours. Lara: You’d be amazed how persuasive I can be, even with dangerous men. Nishimura: I am convinced. I am dangerous too, you remember. But please, enjoy the party while you can, and good luck. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Japan – Nishimura’s Offices
(Lara heads out to join the party. She spots Takamoto and his mercenaries.)
Takamoto: Be brief, Ms Croft. I have many demands on my time, you understand. Lara: Of course, Takamoto-san. I am looking for a piece – a sword fragment – in the care of Waseda University. Or it was until you stole it. Takamoto: (laughs) I am not a thief, and you would be wise to avoid such accusations. Lara: Then I suggest we skip to the negotiations. Takamoto: I don’t have any idea what you’re talking about. Lara: Of course you do. Just name a price. Takamoto: Ms Croft, are you deaf? Lara: I don’t know; let’s see. Try begging for your life like you did the last time we spoke. Takamoto: (points to Lara) Kill her! Kill her now! (After a battle, Nishimura looks around a corridor corner.) Zip: Where’d you get those? Lara: Basic etiquette – never arrive at a party empty handed. Nishimura: Takamoto has no doubt returned to his penthouse. Do not follow him, Lara. His men will be waiting. Zip: His lobby’s a death trap. I know you’re into those, but it’s not really a winning option. Lara: If I can’t go down, I’ll go up. (She looks to Nishimura) How do I get to the roof? Nishimura: The roof? There is an elevator. (He passes over a card.) Be cautious; there is construction above. Zip: I don’t know about this, Lara. Lara: That’s why we have to view the problem from a different angle. Namely, the roof. Nishimura gave me the pass to the lift, and I’m on my way. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Japan – Nishimura’s Offices – the roof
Lara: (she peers through a glass door.) Odd place for a bike. And a nice one, too.
Zip: Huh. Well, it’s a crime to keep a bike like that locked up on a roof. (Lara steps outside.) Zip: All right, that building across the street? That’s Takamoto’s. Lara: He’s likely to be on the top floor. This is going to require some creativity. (She creates a way up.) Zip: Nishimura’s going to bill you for that. Lara: It’s not a party until something gets broken. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Japan – Nishimura’s Offices – the roof
(Lara hops onto the bike.)
Alister: Lara, what exactly are you doing? Lara: Mmmm... Listen to that. Naught to sixty in under three seconds. Alister: Be careful out there. There’s more road for below than there is up top. (Lara rides the bike over a ramp and dangerously swaps roofs.) Zip: Lara, this is crazy-people stuff! Alister: Don’t ever do that again. Lara: Not on that bike I won’t. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Japan – Takamoto’s Offices
Zip: Okay, it gets worse from here. This is like a Yakuza factory.
Lara: Then let’s see about shutting it down. (Lara enters into the building.) Zip: Where are they? It’s not like they don’t know you’re there. Lara: You’ll see them when I do. (Lara enters the room and clears it of mercenaries.) Zip: Looks like there’s no way out. Lara: There’s always a way, Zip. (Lara pulls down a big screen.) Zip: She’s never cared for TV much. Alister: She did them a favour. Maybe now they’ll read a book for a change. (Lara opens a door to head outside.) Alister: There could be more out there, Lara. Do be careful. Lara: What a lovely evening to be outside. Zip: Uh oh, you know what that means. Alister: I’ll get the dimenhydrinate. (Lara climbs a pole up high.) Alister: Please don’t look down. Lara: Heights don’t bother me, Alister. Alister: They make me positively nauseous. Zip: Like I told her in Bolivia. Lara: I’ll try my best to keep my chin up, but I do need to concentrate, if you don’t mind... (Lara swings on a few loose poles) Zip: Hurry up, Lara! It’s not going to hold! They’ll snap any second! (Lara runs down a corridor.) Zip: Whoa, hang on! You see the turret down the hall? Lara: Yes. You smell a trap? Zip: I do. Be careful. (She turns on the sprinklers.) Zip: Good thinking. (She approaches a large ornament.) Zip: What’s that? Alister: It’s more modern art than archaeology, in this context at least. As lovely as that is, don’t you think it’s a little big to bring home by yourself? Zip: Just let the lady work, buddy. (She uses it to block the turret) Alister: Now that’s art with form and function. Zip: Made it. How bad you hit? Lara: I’ve been better. Let’s not do that again. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Japan – Takamoto’s Offices
Takamoto: (he looks down at Lara. There is a large dragon ornament above.) You should not have come here. This is my province, not one of your rotten little tombs.
Lara: Tell me about the sword, Takamoto. Takamoto: What about it? What is it that fascinates you, Ms. Croft? Lara: Let me have a look at it and I’ll tell you. Takamoto: Your persistence will be the death of you. (He walks off and leaves her to deal with his mercenaries. Lara clears the room.) Zip: Okay, Takamoto’s split. What next? Lara: Catching him. (She uses the dragon ornament.) Alister: I admire your straightforward approach. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Japan – Takamoto’s Offices
(Lara walks out into an arena and Takamoto stands above. She stops in the centre of the room.)
Takamoto: You have disrespected me. You have broken into my house. You have killed my men... Lara: I’ve simplified your payroll, and now, if you don’t mind, I’ll streamline your inventory. Takamoto: You speak of this. It is the most prized of my collection. Lara: And why is that? Takamoto: I am fond of recovering objects from dead Englishmen – in this case, one of your Crusaders. Some have even said the warmonger was one of your King Arthur’s Knights. I do not know how the fool came by it, for it is clearly far older than the eleventh century, when your people lived in huts of mud. Lara: And for this reason you’d rather die than hand it over. Takamoto: No, for this one. (He uses the sword to attack her. She dodges.) |
LOCATION: (In Game) Japan – Takamoto’s Offices
(During battle)
Takamoto: You will not be so lucky this time! Takamoto: Your movements betray your confusion. Takamoto: Beg for your life. Takamoto: Have I satisfied your curiosity now? Then it’s time to die! Takamoto: Do you understand, Ms. Croft? The artefact is mine! Takamoto: You were a fool to come here! Takamoto: Here is what you wish for! Takamoto: Where is your clever tongue now? (Lara kills him.) Takamoto: Assassin! Hell swallow you. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Japan – Takamoto’s Offices
Lara: (She picks up the staff and takes off the sword tip.) This is it all right.
Alister: Did you see what it can do?! Lara: Yes, Alister. I did. Zip: Nishimura’s got a chopper outside waiting for you. Lara: Excellent. Tell him he’s my new favourite person. Lara: (She climbs into Nishimura’s helicopter.) Thank you, Nishimura-san. I’m very relieved to find you here. Nishimura: I am relieving myself too. What about Takamoto? Where is he? Lara: It depends on whether he was naughty or nice. Zip: I’ve got a line on James Rutland, by the way. Want to go to Ghana? Lara: Absolutely. Africa is among my favourite continents. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) West Africa - Ghana
(Lara climbs off her motorbike and jumped down a slope.)
Lara: No sign of Rutland so far. Have we worked out what he’s doing here? |
LOCATION: (In Game) West Africa - Ghana
Zip: No, but there’s something else. When I was going over the map, Winston said your parents have been there – your dad worked this site before you were born.
Lara: That’s not so peculiar; it happens occasionally. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) West Africa - Ghana
(Lara stops at an edge, and sees a waterfall in front of her.)
Lara: If all else fails, I can get into the postcard business. (Something catches her eye.) Oh, now look at the little termites mucking it all up. That won’t do at all. Zip: Looks like they didn’t get in from this side. Any ideas? Lara: We’ll see. I do my best thinking plunging off cliffs. |
LOCATION: (In Game) West Africa - Ghana
(Lara climbs out of the water.)
Lara: The water’s absolutely perfect. I’ve missed Ghana. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) West Africa - Ghana
(Lara opens a gate, which reveals a hidden temple.)
Zip: Oh, that’s where we put the temple. Lara: Grand entrances are always impractical. It’s what makes them grand. Rutland: Lara! You’re a busy beaver, aren’t you? (He makes himself seen.) Lara: Oh look, it’s Rutland. Fancy dropping down for a chat, then? Rutland: Only if you can shoot this far. Lara: You know long-distance relationships inevitably come to an end. Rutland: I’d wish you luck with that, but, uh... you know... (He walks off.) |
LOCATION: (In Game) West Africa - Ghana
(Lara has just crossed a bridge.)
Lara: Alister should really have a look at this. Zip: He’s still trying to figure out where these sword pieces originally came from. Just you and me for now. (She enters the temple and uses a raft to help get across the water.) So what kind of ancient artifact you got there? Lara: The modern kind. Rutland’s men must have been using it to move about. (She looks at the architecture.) I’ve seen this before. In my father’s sketchbook... He has been here. (Lara kills a mercenary.) Zip: Darn, it wasn’t Rutland. Lara: He’s still about somewhere. (There is a trap in front that isn’t working.) Zip: Not very effective for a trap. Lara: Not these days. Something must be jamming the works. (Inside a larger area, Lara takes out the mercenaries and shoots a pillar that has been resting against a waterwheel. It breaks and the wheel turns, allowing the traps to continue working.) Zip: Waterwheel’s got things running again. Congratulations, you got your wish. The place is a deathtrap. Lara: It needed a woman’s touch. (She sets to work on getting the other waterwheel moving. She climbs a ladder upwards.) This channel runs directly down to the wheel. Zip: Can’t have a wheel without a couple thousand gallons of water. Lara: No. It’s simply not done. (She manages to fill the room with water.) Zip: Looks good. Think the wheel’s turning yet? Lara: Let’s have a look. (The wheel is now turning.) Much better. Zip: You know, you scare me. Lara: You may want to close your eyes, then. (Passing the trap, there is a blade trap up ahead.) There’s no avoiding these. Zip: This isn’t going to fly, Lara. If one of those things even touches you... Lara: I know. Which means I’ll have to stop them somehow. (She uses a stone block to pass them.) They don’t build them like that anymore. (She passes another set of a similar blade trap.) I must install some of these in the gym. Zip: Remind me later to cancel my membership. (After following a corridor, Lara pauses before a trap.) What is it? You hear something? Lara: I feel something. (A large boulder begins to roll.) Zip: Oh, Hell no! (Lara runs away, just making it out and around a corner in time.) Lara: Oh, I’ve missed Ghana! Alister: Narrowly escaping death again, I see. Lara: There you are, Alister. You’ve found something about the sword fragment, then? Alister: A few things, actually. I extrapolated the markings on the artifact to get a sense of what the entire pattern would look like, and then I found what- Zip: Whoops. We have a prob- Lara: Alister? Zip? That’s odd. (She progresses on a little further.) Zip? Alister? Do you read me? I don’t like this at all. (She tries again a little later on.) Zip? Are you there? Alister? All those satellites and computers just to perfect the science of talking to oneself. (She progresses on a little further.) Hello? Are you chaps getting any of this? What the devil are they doing? (She heads back into the temple, on a higher level.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) West Africa - Ghana
(She finds something on the ground in a corridor. She picks it up.)
Lara: This shouldn’t be here... Oh... (She reads an inscription on the back.) “Dearest Amelia – Yours always – Richard.” It was Mother’s. Zip, can you hear me? |
LOCATION: (In Game) West Africa - Ghana
Lara: Where are you? (She heads out the temple, heads upwards and tackles with Rutland’s mercenaries.

(Lara makes it across to an entrance on the other side. She opens a door and finds Rutland in an arena.)
Rutland: Lara! You came for the Ghalali Key, too, then. Perfect! Lara: Pretend I don’t know what you’re talking about. Rutland: Oh, you know, it’s what puts the sword back together. It’s the size of a fist, and according to Amanda’s research, it’s here. Lara: What do you know about Amanda? Where is she? Rutland: So, your...your father did some digging here, didn’t he? You know, Amanda thought maybe he found the Key. Lara: I don’t know what you’re talking about. Tell me about that sword fragment you’re so fond of waving about. Rutland: Ha! Well, I have been spending some time with it, and I’ve learned a couple things. Let me show you. (He jumps up to a ledge and prepares to fight her.) |

(Rutland’s phrases during battle.)
Rutland: Fine, we’ll do it your way. Rutland: Ready for this...watch! Rutland: Damn you, Lara! Rutland: Hey, you have some, too! Mine are bigger! (He says when Lara uses grenades.) Rutland: Don’t waste those, Lara – I’ll bet you don’t have very many. (He says when Lara uses grenades.) Rutland: Whoa, what are you doing?! I thought archaeologists were a little more careful than this. (He says as Lara pulls down a platform.) Rutland: Yow! That toy of yours is pretty handy after all. I still bet you’d trade it for mine, though. (He says as Lara pulls down a platform.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) West Africa - Ghana
(Rutland falls to his knees defeated.)
Rutland: ...Amanda... see... you... Lara: I’m really not your enemy, Rutland. (She picks up the sword fragment and puts it against her own piece.) These pieces weren’t broken apart. They were designed to separate and reattach. The Ghalali Key does that? (Rutland doesn’t answer.) I don’t suppose you’d tell me where this came from. The Crusades? King Arthur? Rutland: History doesn’t interest me. Lara: Well then, why don’t you stay here and consider the future. Make sure I’m not in it, however. (She walks away from him.) You won’t enjoy seeing me again. Rutland: Your father might not have found the Ghalali Key, but Amanda doesn’t know that, and she’s at your mansion right now. You’d better have good insurance. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) West Africa - Ghana
(Lara gets back to her motorbike and races off.)
Zip: Lara! Lara: God, finally! I’ve been trying to get through for ages. What happened? Zip: This woman just tore her way through the front door. She had some sort of... I don’t know what the hell it was.. Alister: It was like black smoke. Lara: I’ll be there straight away. Alister: No! We’re fine! Look, you’ve got to follow her! She’s going for another piece of the sword! Lara: What? Where? Alister: In Kazakhstan. I found a photo that matches the pieces you have. Lara: All right. Do an inventory and try to locate something called the Ghalali Key. Meanwhile, it looks as if I’m bound for colder climes. Zip: Pack warm. Lara: I mean to be cold. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Kazakhstan
(Lara slides down a snowy slope overlooking an old Soviet base.)
Lara: Alister, I’m at the base. Go ahead. Alister: I was right, it was a secret Soviet project from the 50’s called “Carbonek”. The laboratory was studying an ancient sword fragment, but some mysterious disaster brought the KGB down and they erased it all from history...almost. (Lara takes out her binoculars.) Lara: There seems to be trouble below. Alister: You got there right on time. (She sees two sets of soldiers firing at each other.) Lara: Or a little late. Those are Rutland’s men attacking the Kazakhs. Alister: Amanda’s. Most likely she’s the one behind this. Zip: The lab is somehow connected to that military base, but we don’t know how. If you can find the command center, we might get a better idea. Now, after the firefight dies down, you should- Lara: Oh, come now, Zip. Waiting is for the patient...Or those without parachutes. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
Zip: Well I’d look around more, but go ahead and jump when you’re ready.
(Lara jumps over the cliff.) Alister: Now, Lara! (She uses her parachute and lands on a rooftop.) Very nice, Lara, but you’ve just leapt from the frying pan into a nest of hornets. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Kazakhstan
(Lara enters the medical office to see a mercenary aiming at two Kazakhs.)
Lara: Get down! (She dives as she shoots at the mercenary. She holsters her pistols and the Kazakhs look at her.) Kazakh Soldier 01: You are American? Lara: British. And it looks like we share an enemy. (Gun fire shatters the nearby window and Lara crouches.) Where is you command center? Kazakh Soldier 02: (Speaking Russian) Don’t tell her? What’s she doing here? Kazakh Soldier 01: (Speaking Russian) Wait, if she uses the code without the key, the alarm will trigger and Central will send us help! Kazakh Soldier 02: (Speaking Russian) What are you saying? Kazakh Soldier 01: (Speaking Russian) We’re guarding snow and wolf piss here! You want to go yourself? Kazakh Soldier 02: Through the gate. The code is K1879. Lara: (Speaking Russian) Thanks. Wish me luck. |

(Lara leaves the medical office.)
Zip: I don’t know what the hell you guys were talking about, but I think the gate they mentioned is up ahead. Lara: Lovely. That keeps things simple, doesn’t it? |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Kazakhstan
(Lara enters the command centre and walks up to the computer.)
Zip: Satellite photos? We’ve got our own. There’s nothing there. Lara: The lab wouldn’t be visible from above. We need maps. There it is. Alister: Oof. That’s a hike. Lara: I’m not walking. There’s a military transport train that runs past the lab. It looks like Amanda’s boys are ahead of me – I’d better run. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
(Lara leaves the command center through the roof.)
Zip: Whoops. Satellite feed’s showing your train’s about to roll. You better run fast. (She heads towards the train, and after taking out the mercenaries, it leaves.) Zip: Train’s leaving. Better get a moving, then, or you’ll miss your train. Alister: Hurry, Lara! Don’t let that Amanda woman get there first. Lara: Forget the train...I have a better idea. (She hops onto a deserted motorbike and rides along the tracks.) |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
(Lara is riding her bike along the tracks.)
Zip: What’s that? What’s going on? Lara: They’re decoupling the cars! (Further down the track.) Zip: Damn, I can’t see well enough. What happened? Lara: They let loose a few cars and they’re blocking the tunnel. But I think I saw a path off to the right up ahead. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
(Zip’s expressions after Lara rides over a jump on her motorbike.)
Zip: Yeah! Catch some air! Zip: Yeah, baby! Do that again! Zip: All right! Zip: Whooooo! Okay, now you’re just showing off! Lara: Zip, I never “show off”. Zip: Yeah, yeah, I know. Zip: Yeah! Zip: Whooooo hoooo! I’m got we got that one on tape! |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
(Lara lands the motorbike on top of the train but drives it further along.)
Zip: Damn, so now you’re going to tell me you planned to do that. Lara: Of course I did. Zip: Of course you did. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
(Lara jumps off the train as it crashes into the lab.)
Zip: Phew. I feel like I just lived through a train wreck – how about you? Alister: Undoubtedly. Lara: Amanda’s already inside, and the door’s sealed. Zip: So what now? Lara: There’s a vent on the wall to the right of the cargo door. The fan’s running, she got the power on. Alister: How will you get in? Lara: One way or another. (She enters the vent.) It’s getting colder. Alister: It looks as if you’ve stumbled into another tomb after all. I wonder what he’s doing in here. (Lara picks up the scientist’s letter.) Lara: He’s been trying to get out since the Fifties, he’s frozen to death, the poor fellow. Hardly a proper end for a scientist. The experiment’s gone wrong... The KGB sealed the facility... He tried to escape through the vents but got trapped. Alister: My God. Lara: (Lara travels further through the vents.) It is much colder in here than it was outside. Alister: I’m not sure turning on the power was a good idea. Zip: Looks like a few things in there won’t be getting the juice they need. Lara: The heater must be one of them. (She soon emerges out of the vents.) Look at the lights. She’s only found the emergency power. Zip: She came in through the main doors – I don’t think she’s been here. Looks like there’s a generator on the other side of the room – she would have started it. (She looks at the wall.) Lara: It’s a map of the facility. Zip: Very retro. It probably looks like a carnival sideshow when the power is on. (Lara uses her grapple to pull at a plug.) Lara: It sounds as if it’s out of fuel. (She adds the fuel to the generator.) That should do it. (She pulls at the plug again.) Zip: There you go. (Now, she heads through to a corridor where there is a thick green gas.) Alister: I wonder if that’s toxic. Zip: I’d guess it’s coolant, but who knows what kind of lethal crap the Soviets were using. Lara: I’d rather not find out firsthand. (She encounters electric arcs on some pipes above.) Zip: It’s hot! |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Kazakhstan
(Lara walks into a large room. She sees Amanda working at a console.)
Zip: Hey! That’s her! Lara: Amanda? Amanda: Dammit, Lara, I’m busy. Lara: I see you’ve changed your look. That was you in Bolivia, then, with Rutland. Amanda: (She begins to walk towards a bridge.) I’ve been all over, and I’m going places you can’t conceive of. You’re the one being left behind this time. Sorry. Lara: I’m sorry, Amanda. If I’d known you were alive, I swear that I would have done everything I could to save you. Amanda: Please. I got over that a long time ago. You know what really used to bug me, though? When I got out and saw that you left without even trying to... oh, what is it archaeologists do? Oh, right. Dig. Lara: We’d thought of it as a memorial. Amanda: Whatever. (She walks away and looks at a guard.) Don’t let her follow me. (The guard throws a grenade onto the bridge and Lara jumps out of the way of the explosion.) |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
(They look at a large, seated machine.)
Zip: Check out the big gun thing. How spaced out is that? Maybe it’ll help you. (Lara moves further to a larger contraption.) Wow. Don’t get hit by any of those electrical arcs. Lara: I thought you said it wasn’t running. Zip: That’s just ambient discharge. If the Tower was on, you’d know it. Lara: And if I were the energy source, where would I be? Zip: Up top. (Lara climbs up the poles to an upper level. She finds another scientist with another letter.) Lara: Another scientist. No warmth for him up here either. They funnelled Tesla energy into the artifact, and there was an enormous discharge of some sort. The KGB shut down the operation, removed the core, sealed off the lab in sections, and left behind those scientists who weren’t forcibly removed. Alister: A peculiar turn of events. Lara: Can the tower be powered up from here? Zip: Not without the core. Looks like it’s not here. I guess that’s what those tracks in the floor are for. (Lara follows the tracks into a corridor.) Lara: What are those hanging cords and sockets? Zip: Decoupled high-current cables. You’re lucky they’re off, or you’d be standing in the middle of a painful light parade. (She comes to another large room.) Okay, there’s the core up ahead. Lara: Locked. Zip: It doesn’t look like it has a charge, but you might be able to juice it from the control room above you. Lara: There’s heavy debris on the tracks. I don’t see how I can move it... Zip: It doesn’t matter if the core doesn’t have power. Get it charged and then we can deal with that. (As Lara climbs up to an upper walkway, a different voice comes through.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Kazakhstan
Amanda: Hello, Lara.
Zip: What the- How the hell did you get on this channel? Lara: Hush, Zip. She must have taken a headset while she was rearranging your office. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
Amanda: You’re so smart, Lara. Do you know why the Soviets called their project “Carbonek”?
Lara: It’s the castle where Lancelot sought the Holy Grail. Not the first connection to Arthurian myth I’ve come across. Amanda: “Myth”, she calls it. A limited word for a limited perspective. You were always such the scientist – you’re probably right at home with all these Tesla contraptions, aren’t you? Lara: As much as anyone, I suppose. Amanda: The Russians activated a power in the artifact that literal minds can’t handle, and it destroyed them, so don’t push the wrong buttons. Lara: You’d better not either. Amanda: But I know which ones are the right ones. Lara: You’ve learnt to read Russian since I last saw you? Amanda? Zip: She hung up. What the hell was that about? Lara: She’s having difficulty obtaining the sword fragment and she doesn’t want to blow everything up in the process. Zip: Uh... Maybe you should’ve told her what she wanted to know. (Lara finds another corpse.) Lara: Another unlucky scientist. He writes that at least a dozen of his colleagues were killed in the experiment. The artifact converted the Tesla voltage into something else...a wave of concussive force of some kind. Alister: That’s familiar enough. So why were they shut down? Lara: Mmm...They refused to repeat the experiment, and when the KGB tried to persuade them otherwise, it got nasty. (She pulls a lever and adds power to the core.) Zip: Oh, man! Now, that’s how you do it! Lara: Is that supposed to stop at some point? Zip: It’s not charged all the way. I don’t know what’s wrong. Lara: How am I supposed to move it if I can’t touch it? Zip: The cable on your grapple is insulated. Lara: Right. (She pulls it with her grapple along the tracks.) Zip: Okay... That’s how it works. Yeah, there we go! Full power, baby! (Lara pulls the core closer to the door and it blasts it open.) Now that’s how you open a door! Man, they should’ve worked on mass-marketing this tech. Tesla was a genius! Lara: I prefer doorknobs. (If Lara falls into the coolant, Zip will tell her to get out of it.) Zip: Get up above it! Lara: God! It burns! (Following the core, Lara sees that the hanging cords and sockets have become electrified.) Lara: What’s happened here? Zip: Weird. The core must have powered these cables somehow, and those rails in the wall are the most convenient conductors around. (If Lara gets too close to the cables, Zip or Alister will warn her.) Zip: Watch yourself! Alister: Careful! (Now that the core is moving towards the large tower, Lara needs to open the doorway for it.) Zip: Cool. All you have to do is get the panel out of the way, and we’re in business. (The core moves inside and the tower powers up.) That’s what I’m talking about! That’s like a Christmas tree in hell! |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Kazakhstan
(Now that the door has power, Lara passes through it and sees a shield on a table.)
Lara: It’s a shield, tenth or eleventh century...probably recovered with the piece we’re looking for. (She picks it up.) It resembles Lancelot’s crest, doesn’t it? Alister: It would if the bugger had existed. (She turns the shield over.) Lara: Oh, what’s this now? It looks like a map. Have a good look and see what you can make of it. Zip: What do you think it’s for? Lara: Maybe our knight needed help finding his way home. (She puts the shield down.) Or perhaps this piece wasn’t all he had. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
Zip: You think he stashed more of the sword somewhere?
Lara: Possibly. But the map is useless without a reference point. Alister: I’ll work on it. Going off line. Lara: Splendid. (She sees another scientist’s corpse.) Frozen to death like the others. A number of minor relics were recovered along with the artifact, but the poor fellow couldn’t find anyone to help him study them. Alister: I empathize. Why their lack of interest? Lara: They were too contemporary for serious study. It seems they date as recently as the first millennium. Alister: I’m sorry, but am I missing something? How old exactly is this artifact we’re looking for? Lara: Older than you’d think. (Lara returns to the area with the Tesla gun, where some mercenaries have appeared across the bridge. Lara climbs onto the gun.) Zip: I don’t think I’ve ever been happier. Show me what it can do! (Lara takes out the guards and uses the gun to move a platform to help her get across. She follows the corridor to a large arena.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Kazakhstan
(She sees Amanda on a level above.)
Lara: Amanda. I’m sorry for what happened, but we can still work together. Amanda: There is no we, Lara. There never was. It was just me down there. Me and this. (She points to the stone on her necklace.) Do you remember it? I touched it, and it touched me back. Lara: I don’t think that was a good thing. Amanda: I tamed it then. And made it my own. (She touches it again and begins to harness its power. A creature emerges and floats to the ground.) Lara: My God... Amanda! Amanda: A little friendlier than it was in Paraíso, isn’t it? I taught it how to fetch. Lara: You’re mad! It killed our friends, Amanda! And it almost killed us! Amanda: And it saved my life, once I mastered it. It’s all about a broader perception. I’d stay away from it if I were you, though. It can still be a little touchy. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Kazakhstan
(Lara heads towards the Tesla gun in the centre.)
Amanda: Stay out of its way, Lara! I don’t control it – I only unleash it! It’ll kill anything in its way! (Lara goes around, pulling levers to release large conductors.) Alister: There it is! The sword fragment! Clamped overhead! Lara: Zip, what do I need to do to get it out of there? Zip: I...I haven’t got a clue. I know a little about Tesla technology, but this place is a mystery. (After Lara removes the force field around the artefact, she is able to reach it.) Amanda: What did you do?! You’re going to kill us both! Zip: This must be the experiment that blast those scientists fifty years ago! You’ve got to pull out the artefact from the focal point before it happens again! |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Kazakhstan
(Lara grabs the artefact with her grapple. The place become volatile and falls apart. Amanda leaves and Lara drops through a hole in the floor.)
Zip: Damn, you’re lucky; you know that, right? Lara: I’d like to think some skill was involved. (She hops into a tunnel.) Did Alister have any luck with the map I sent? Alister: I’m back. You’re not going to believe where this leads. Lara: Oh, you’re going to find me extremely credulous today. Alister: Cornwall. Lara: As in, take the M5 to the A30 Cornwall? Alister: As the crow drives. Lara: Well then, let’s see who can get there first. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) England - Cornwall
(Lara rides in on her bike. Zip and Alister are waiting outside an abandoned King Arthur museum in his van.)
Lara: There seems to be a fine line between coincidence and irony. Zip: You sure about that map? (He asks Alister, who moves to the front of the van.) Alister: Unfortunately. There was some nonsense about the discovery of the real King Arthur’s tomb here years ago, soon discredited. And yet another roadside attraction was born. Lara: Well, let’s see what we can see, shall we? At least, it should be educational. (Lara climbs up a drainpipe and inside a building.) |
LOCATION: (In Game) England - Cornwall
Lara: Either housekeeping should be fired, or no one’s been inside for months. (Lara approaches a lever, a sword in a stone.) Now this is familiar enough.
Zip: Go for it, Lara – test your royalty. (She attempts to pull it but fails.) Lara: No “King of England” jokes, Alister. I probably have to turn on the power first. (She climbs up to a storage room above.) This place has seen better days. Alister: Mmm. It’s been condemned since the death of the owner, one Professor Worth. I shudder to think that at one time he had students. (Lara heads outside and turns on the power.) Lara: And we have power. Zip: Hey, now that the power’s on, maybe you can go back and pull out Excalibur. Alister: It’s not Excalibur! The Sword in the Stone and Excalibur were two different bloody swords. Arthur got Excalibur after the Sword in the Stone broke in his battle with Pellinore. Oh, good grief, nobody gets it straight. Zip: That’s because nobody cares. Lara: Boys... Zip: Sorry. Exhibit: Come ye hither and hearken to ye tale of King Arthur! How he wast reared by Sir Ector, but born – yea verily – of ye loins of King Uther Pendragon, unbeknownst to all save Merlin. How ye wonderous wizard Merlin didst bringeth ye boy Arthur to ye Sword in ye Stone, which no man hadst been able to lifteth. How Arthur didst then taketh ye sword, thusly becoming King of England! Thou too may attempteth to pull yon sword from yon stone, but wilt Merlin find thee kingly enough to enter... THE TRUE KING ARTHUR MUSEUM?! (Lara pulls the lever again.) Exhibit: Enter, Once and Future King! Merlin deems you worthy! (The door opens.) Alister: Pfft. The real Merlin would roll around in the mud and bark at you. And I’m being generous by calling it “mud”. Lara: There’s no difference between stupid and charming with you, is there? Alister: Hmmph. (Exhibit with a knight and a magican) Exhibit: So that there wouldst be no squabbling betwixt ye knights, Merlin bequeathed upon Arthur yon ROUND TABLE, which wast a table neither square nor buttressed, but circular in form. ‘Twas a symbol of unity and equality and ‘twas from whiter the Arthur’s knights took’st their THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE. Lara: I’m assuming you’re taking notes. Zip: Yea, verily. (Missing Exhibit) Exhibit: BEHOLD ye HOLY GRAIL! Such a vision of yon CUP OF CHRIST didst verily appeareth to Arthur and his knights, whereupon several amongst them didst quest for to find it anon. And they ‘twere four; Lancelot, Galahad, Percival and Bors, and yonder they journeyed, none ere returning, though Galahad didst see the Grail and yea, his heart ‘twas gladdened muchly. Zip: How do they know he found it if he didn’t return? Alister: Exactly. (Exhibit with 3 knights) Exhibit: Thus didst King Arthur gather ‘round his person ye greatest knights of ye realm that they mightst be paragons of chivalry and virtue. Gaily they cam’st, yea and ‘twas an assembly as hadst nought before been seeneth, and verily, there wast much rejoicing. Zip: Hey, push the button again. It’s like electroshock therapy for Alister here. Lara: I like to think it keeps him sharp. (Exhibit with Arthur and Merlin by a river) Exhibit: And what of Excalibur, ye mighty sword of legend? ‘Twas Merlin who didst bringeth Arthur to yon magical lake where didst dwell ye Lady of the Lake, and from her hand didst Arthur take Excalibur, and yea, ye sword couldst ne’er be broken for ‘twas its magic. Zip: I’m confused. Weren’t Excalibur and the Sword in the Stone the same thing? Alister: THEY WERE TWO BLOODY DIFFERENT SWORDS. Lara: Now, Zip... that was too easy. (Exhibit with no diorama) Exhibit: Then didst Merlin fall in love with Nimue, to whom he didst teacheth his magicks. But ere long, she did use her magicks against her lover, imprisoning him. Wherefore it wast that when Arthur didst do battle with Mordred, Merlin couldst not protecteth him. It seemeth that of times ye wisest of men canst maketh mistakes. Lara: It was his own fault, really. Zip: Never trust a woman? Lara: Don’t believe in magic. (Exhibit with Arthur and Mordred) Exhibit: For hours didst Arthur and Mordred hackle upon Salisbury Plain, Arthur with Excalibur, Mordred with its scabbard. Then it wast that both wert disarmed, and Arthur didst strike Mordred a fatal blow with ye spear of Sir Bedivere. Anon came’st more tragedy, for Arthur wast himself mortally wounded in ye battle, and yea, yon sky didst darken. Alister: There’s a logical explanation for that. It’s called evening. Lara: You’re so literal, Alister. Archaeology is half metaphor, you know. (When Lara pulls another lever, another exhibit plays. The lever malfunctions, but wooden boards fall away, showing a counterweight.) Exhibit: Before he didst die, Arthur bade’st his knight Bedivere to returneth Excalibur to yon Lady of ye Lake. And lo, didst Arthur’s body then slumber, and yea, it wast borne away to Avalon, where it is said that from thither shalt he some day returneth to claimeth again his crown! Zip: Well, if he went to Avalon, then whose tomb’s supposed to be here? Lara: Maybe the grunting Saxon or the Roman fascist that Alister believes the whole legend was built around. (There is a corridor leading downwards from a room with crates.) Hmm. This is where the “truth behind the myth” is supposed to be explained, but it’s been turned into a warehouse. Alister: Fitting. There’s been so little truth everywhere else, why start here? The only factual basis behind the King Arthur myths died centuries before this place was built. Lara: Give Professor Worth some credit. If he had to close an exhibit for renovations, at least he picked the most boring one. (She heads into a room hidden above.) This must be our kindly professor’s office space. Alister: Done up as spottily as his reputation. Lara: Said the pot to the kettle. Hmm. (She looks at his desk.) Professor Worth says here that the tomb of King Arthur – the one his museum’s built over – is a fake. Alister: No surprise there. At least he knows his museum is for tourists. Lara: But Professor Worth believed the sarcophagus was placed here by Arthur’s contemporaries to lure thieves from the gravesite of the actual King Arthur. Alister: Who doesn’t exist. Lara: That’s where you and the professor differ. (She follows the corridor behind the stacked crates and sees a sarcophagus.) This definitely isn’t Arthur’s tomb. Alister: We knew that already. Zip: What’s wrong with it? Lara: I’ve seen enough tombs in my life to know when I’m looking at a cenotaph. Zip: Say who? Lara: A diversion. This place is trying too hard. It’s hiding something. Alister: A body? Lara: No, that’s the problem. (She uses the forklift to smash through a false wall.) Not this is better. Zip: Nice. Alister: Be careful. You don’t want to demolish anything important. Lara: Really, Alister. I have a velveteen touch. But I’m glad to see you now think there may be something important here. (Lara and the forklift smash through another false wall, only to find a long drop behind it. Lara abandons the forklift and jumps to safety.) Alister: Are you all right? Lara: I decided to take the slow way down instead. Zip: Shoulda told that to the forklift. (Lara begins to make her way around and down the crumbled and broken windows and stairs.) Alister: Be careful, Lara. Lara: Please, Alister, this will take some concentration. Zip: Yeah, pipe down, Alister, or I won’t let you sit up front with me anymore. (Lara makes it to the bottom of the room.) Alister: I’m glad you made it down safely. Lara: So am I. Zip: But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to be quiet anymore. (Lara progresses to a fiery pit.) Looks like there’s oil seeping into the water table. Who knows how long it’s been burning. Alister: I wonder if the architect’s design deliberately took this into account. (Lara walks onwards to see grates with fire roaring out of it.) Lara: There’s your answer, Alister. Zip: Wow. You know you’re going to ruin your boots. Lara: Not on the path I’ll need to take. (She crosses the two sets of grates to find a tall gate.) Maybe there’s a way up and over. (The next room has dozens of large, rotating claw-blades.) Zip: This looks like my garbage disposal. Alister: I hope you’re not leaping through there, Lara. There must be a way to stop them up. Lara: I certainly hope so. (Getting past the blades, Lara finds a longer grate of fire.) Zip: No way you’re long-jumping that. Lara: No. I’ll have to make a path. But it might have been worth trying just to hear you lads squeal about it. (She passes the fire grates, opens a gate and comes across a pressure pad.) Zip: Hey Alister, why don’t you head on down there and stand on that plate for her? Alister: Why don’t you go down and hold that door open? Zip: You see that crate up on that shelf over there? You could use that on the pressure plate. Alister: It’s not a crate, it’s a coffin. Someone’s revered ancestor is in there. Lara: Hmmm. (Lara pulls the coffin to the plate.) Zip: And here’s your final final resting place, sir. Lara: If we’re through having fun, it’s time to get back to business. (She rides a coffin along some waterways.) Alister: I’ll take this time to adjust some travel arrangements I’ve made. It shouldn’t take too long. Zip: Coward. Don’t worry, Lara, I’ve still got an eye on you. Probably won’t be able to hear each other too well when you’re underwater, though. Lara: There is a god. (Alister chuckles.) Zip: Hey, I heard that. (She rides along the waterway and falls out into a large room.) Hey, Alister! You just missed a waterfall! (She climbs up in front of a large building.) Lara: Will you look at that. Oh, this is brilliant. Alister: Hmmm... That is interesting. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) England - Cornwall
(Lara climbs down a rope from the ceiling to the ground of the large building. She looks around before walking around the perimeter.)
Zip: Signal’s poor, Lara. What are we looking at? Lara: We’re looking at myth. Except it’s real. They’re all here – the court of Camelot. Alister: You’re sure about this? King Arthur who wast verily of ye loins of Uther Pendragon? Lara: I’ve no doubt about the authenticity of this tomb, Alister. Arthur was the 11th Century figure that became legend. The Once and Future King was as real then as the air I’m breathing now. (She stands in front of a figure encased in a resin orb.) Alister: I don’t know, Lara. Excalibur. The sword in the stone. Lara: That’s how it always goes, doesn’t it? Alister: Pardon? Lara: Swords in stones, Alister. They’re part of the monomyth. There wasn’t just one Excalibur or one Merlin. We keep seeing swords and daises all over the world because they were everywhere. Alister: So, you’re saying that everywhere they went they raised up kings...shaping the course of human destiny? Lara: Well, it’s a possibility. Alister: Who? And what happened to them and their swords? Lara: Perhaps they’re in Avalon – it’s a good a place as any. (She stands in front of a sarcophagus.) Except our Merlin was killed, and our Excalibur was left in pieces in the hands of the locals. Zip: So where’s Avalon? Lara: I don’t know. On the other side of the looking glass, perhaps. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) England - Cornwall
(Lara crouches by the sarcophagus of Bedivere.)
Lara: It says Bedivere returned a fragment of Excalibur to Arthur after the other pieces were carried off by the knights. |
LOCATION: (In Game) England - Cornwall
Zip: Where’d they go?
Lara: To find Avalon, perhaps. The quest for the “Holy Grail”. Lancelot, Galahad, Percival, and Bors. Their tombs are empty. It says this fragment was left with Arthur to help him leave this mausoleum when the time came. Perhaps it will help me instead. (She uses the chandelier to strike a bell, which shatters the resin orb around King Arthur. Lara walks towards him.) Arthur Pendragon, King of the Britons. I wouldn’t take Excalibur if I didn’t need it so. I hope you can forgive me. Zip: Lara, there’s something going on up here... Alister, you see that? Alister: See what? Zip: Ah, hell. Get your hands—Get off-- Lara: Zip! Alister! Alister: Hey! Let go! Lara! Lara: Zip! What’s happening?! (Lara heads out the mausoleum, battles a sea serpent and fights some mercenaries.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) England - Cornwall
(Lara hears a mercenary outside.)
Mercenary: Jake? Morgan? (He is pointing his rifle at Zip and Alister, who are stood by the side of the van.) What’s going on!? (He flicks a switch to open the garage door. The area is clear so he heads inside the building. After some ruckus, he is thrown back outside against the van. Lara appears.) Lara: Hello, lads. Zip: Hey Lara, what’s up? Lara: They didn’t make off with your credit cards, did they? Is everything alright? Alister? Alister: I’m...fine, I’m fine. Just not my usual evening routine. Lara: Then let’s go home. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) England - Surrey - Croft Manor
(With all the pieces of Excalibur gathered, Lara sets them out on the table in the main hall. Winston, Zip and Alister have gathered around the table.)
Alister: Brilliant. This is brilliant. King Arthur was real, the Knights of the Round Table were real, and now we have Excalibur right here in front of us. Those stodgy bastards at Oxford will have kittens when they hear of this. Lara: It’s even bigger than that, Alister. What Arthur called Excalibur is a powerful artifact that predates him by millennia. Zip: Well, it’s still in pieces. Who brought the superglue? Lara: While I was in Ghana, I asked you to look around for the Ghalali Key. No luck, I take it. Winston: It was not among your father’s collection. Zip: Or his records. Lara: It wasn’t in Ghana either, or Rutland was... Hello, what’s this? (She puts two of the pieces together and recognises a familiar shape.) I’ve seen you before, haven’t I? Hang on... (She takes a look at the painting above the fireplace. She sees the shape, worn by her mother as a brooch.) A striking resemblance, don’t you think? (Winston and Alister join Lara’s side to look at the painting.) Winston: The pendant was a gift from your father. I never knew where he’d come by it, until now... Alister: Where is it now? Lara: It’s in the Himalayas. My mother had it with her when... Zip, Alister, I’m going to Nepal. Please make the usual arrangements. (Lara heads up the stairs.) Zip: We’ll take care of it. C’mon, man. (Zip and Alister head back to the tech area and Winston goes to the stairs.) Winston: Not to presume, Lady Croft, but I’d hoped you wouldn’t try to use the sword yourself after what happened to your mother. Lara: She removed the sword – that’s what killed her. I don’t intend to do the same. If my father had known any of this... He tried so hard. And they hated him for it. Winston: No one hated him, Lara. Lara: It bloody well wasn’t love, was it? His reputation was destroyed. Now there’s more than one thing to be salvaged from that mountain top. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Nepal
(Lara jumps down from a higher ledge.)
Lara: The wreckage should be just on the other side. Zip: I can’t see anything. You sure you’re in the right spot? Lara: I never forget a face. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Nepal
(Lara starts to navigate around the icy cliffs.)
Zip: Once again we find ourselves on a mountain without climbing gear. Alister: And I doubt any of that snow and ice is stable. You should keep moving before it breaks on you. Lara I have done this before, you know. (She makes it across a gap and climbs upwards.) Zip: Now what? Back down and up somewhere else? (She shoots open an ice wall and walks through to another open area.) Lara: There it is. (She sees the plane wreckage.) Zip: Man that’s a wreck. How old were you? Eight or nine? Lara: Something like that. (She quickly reaches a ledge on her way down and a helicopter flies over head.) Alister: Look, now that’s proper gear for getting to the top of a mountain. Lara: That’s one of Rutland’s. I told him to mind his own business, and here he is following me to the earth. Zip: Maybe he heard you wrong. You think he’s in there? Lara: I doubt it. Not when he could be at home with his feet up. (She makes it down to the wreckage.) Zip: Okay, be careful. You know this thing could go over the cliff any second. Lara: I knew it then, and I know it now. I’ll be fine, Zip. Don’t worry. (She walks into the body of the plane.) Zip: Whoa – hold up! You walk in there without weighing down this end, you’ll go right over the edge. Lara: Good advice, Zip. You do look after me. (She pulls in a piece of the wreckage.) Zip: You and Winston. He signs the checks. |
LOCATION: (Quick Time Event) Nepal
(She walks in towards the cockpit.)
Alister: Is that it? Lara: Yes, it is. (The plane rocks forward and Lara reaches to grab the Ghalali Key. She quickly runs and jumps out as it begins to fall off the edge.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Nepal
(Lara looks at the Key.)
Zip: Lara? You okay? Lara: Of course. (She pockets the item.) Zip: Just checking. It’s usually someone else’s past you’re digging into. (Lara takes out her binoculars.) Lara: That’s where you’re wrong, Zip – this has always been what it’s about. Now there’s one more place I’d like to visit. It shouldn’t take too long. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Nepal
(Lara heads inside some ruins covered in snow and ice.)
Alister: My God, Lara. This is fantastic! Look at them all! This is a find in itself! Zip: I do not like this place at all. (She grabs onto a hanging icicle.) Don’t slip! Lara: I’ve got it. (She progresses through the ruins.) Zip: This must be where Santa’s evil brother lives. (She grabs an icy ledge.) Alister: Bloody hell. It’s too bleeding chancy, Lara. Lara: I’ll be fine. (She jumps and grabs onto a crumbling icy ledge.) Alister: Good grief, I can’t look anymore. Zip: You always say that but you keep on looking. (Lara reaches an open area, filling with mercenaries as the helicopter begins to take off.) Lara: Rutland’s men. I’ve been wondering where you chaps were. (She takes them out and heads inside the cavern. There are sheets of ice floating on water.) Zip: You’re not going to make it across. And you’ll end up a popsicle if you try to swim it. Lara: Hmmm. If only I could walk on water. (She shoots down an ice sheet and jumps across to a ledge. Then she climbs over a taller ledge to enter a similar room.) Zip: Not to rub it in, but I’m glad I’m at home. Lara: Lovely, Zip. That’s quite enough of that. Zip: Sorry. (If Lara falls into the water, the following conversation happens.) Alister: God, Lara, you must be absolutely freezing. Are you going to be all right? Lara: My bones...have gone numb. Oh my God...it is so very cold. But I’ll be fine... I’ll be fine. (Lara makes it across the water and enters a temple. She has to fight off some snow leopards.) Lara: Good thing these weren’t here last time I came. (The floor of the temple has mostly collapsed, and what is left is fragile. Lara swings across to the other side.) That’s strange. These doors weren’t closed before. I suppose I’ll have to work out how to get them open again. (She uses some crates on a pressure pad to open the doors.) Every object here has a symbolic function. If only the outside world were the same. (The door closes behind her.) Oh, bother. Well, one thing at a time. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Nepal
(Lara sees a dais, the same one from her past.)
Zip: How did you know that would be there? (Lara takes off her backpack and kneels down.) Lara: Give me a moment, please. (She puts the pieces down and puts them together, using the Ghalili Key to seal them together.) Excalibur reforged. Alister: Well done, Lara. (She picks up the sword and looks at the dais.) Lara: It’s broken, but perhaps... (She tries the sword in the dais but it crumbles. |
LOCATION: (In Game) Nepal
Zip: Well, if that’s all it does, this has been a big waste of time.
Lara: Now I suppose it’s time to work out how to leave this monastery. Zip: How about swinging Excalibur once, just for fun. Alister: It’s a priceless artifact, not a toy! Zip: I’m just saying. (Lara swings it to open up a sealed doorway.) Hell, yeah! Lara: And now we know how young Arthur became king. (Lara heads out the doorway and sees the monastery is beginning to collapse.) Zip: Run, Lara! (She rushes across the collapsing platforms and make it back to the other side.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Nepal
Alister: So any more sightseeing, Lara, or are you finished?
Lara: We’re going back to Bolivia. Then we’ll see. |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Bolivia
(Lara returns back to where the temple opens to show a dais on an island. Amanda and Rutland are there with their mercenaries.)
Lara: I’m going to need a clear head for this, lads. No distractions, please. Zip: Good luck. (She uses a zipline to get across and takes out Excalibur.) Lara: Anyone between me and that stone dies. (Amanda touches her Wraith Stone.) Amanda: Stop! I don’t want anything bad to happen, but it will if you come any closer. (Lara swings Excalibur and knocks everyone off their feet.) Rutland: Kill her! (He orders his mercenaries.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Bolivia
(James Rutland gets to his feet and shuffles towards Amanda.)
Amanda: James! Rutland: ...Amanda... see... you... (She runs towards him and catches him as he collapses.) Amanda: Oh god... James... (He dies and Amanda sobs.) Lara: I’m sorry, Amanda. Truly. (Lara walks towards the dais.) Amanda: What are you doing?! Stay away from there! Lara: It’s what I came for. (Amanda stands and rips off her Wraith Stone from her choker.) You don’t need that. We can both do this. Amanda: It only works once, and I’m going to be the one. (Lara prepares herself for a battle as Amanda summons the Unknown Entity with herself in it.) |
LOCATION: (Cut scene) Bolivia
(Amanda collapses to the ground as the Unknown Entity is defeated. Lara kneels by her and picks up the Wraith Stone. She walks over to the dais and puts the sword in. The pillars light up and Lara presses them in the correct sequence, which she had once jotted down in her old diary. She presses the sword and a ring rises from the ground as a portal opens. Lara sees the image of her mother.)
Amelia: No, get back! What? What is it? Young Lara: There’s something in the light. Amelia: Stay here. (Amelia’s image appears in the portal.) What...what are you? Lara: Mother! It’s Lara! Your daughter! Amelia: What? What about my daughter? (Lara recognises the conversation.) Lara: Don’t touch the sword! Amelia: She meant no harm. (Amanda wakes up.) Amanda: Take out the sword! Lara: What? No! Mother! Mother, listen to me- Amanda: It’ll explode unless you pull out the sword! Amelia: Oh God, no! (Like before, Amelia pulls out the sword. A bright light momentarily blinds Lara.) Lara: NO! (She dives out the way before the portal explodes. The sword lands in the ground in front of her.) Amanda: You idiot! You ruined everything! (Lara stands and is angry.) Lara: All these years I blamed myself, and it was you! You killed her! (She points her pistol at Amanda’s head.) Amanda: Killed her?! She’s not dead! She went where I was supposed to go! Where you could have gone! Lara: Make sense right this second or I swear I’ll execute you where you stand! Amanda: I told you to pull out the sword! I TOLD YOU! (Lara begins to fire a shot either side of Amanda’s head, breaking up her sentence.) Lara: WHERE...IS...MY...MOTHER?! Amanda: AVALON! It’s not a myth! Don’t you get it?! You’ll never understand. I’m wasting my breath. (Lara pauses her a moment and turns her back. She quickly turns and hits the butt of the pistol across Amanda’s face, knocking her unconscious.) Lara: From this moment, your every breath is a gift from me. Alister: Lara? Lara: For years my father believed other was alive. It was what kept him going. I pitied him for thinking that way. (She picks up the sword.) Alister, go to the British Museum immediately. Ring me when you get there. Dress in layers – you’ll be there awhile. Alister: Right. I’m off. Lara: Zip, call Professor Eddington at the Cavendish Laboratory. Arrange a meeting. Zip: Will do. What should I tell him? Lara: Tell him... Tell him my father was right about everything, and there may still be time to do something about it. |
LOCATION: (In Game) England – Surrey – Croft Manor
(When Lara completes a line of gymnastic moves)
Alister: That was quite cathartic! Alister: That's the way to do it! (When Lara enters Zip’s tech room) Zip: Hey, Lara. Lara: Hello, Zip. (When Lara repeatedly goes into the tech room after completing various tasks) Lara: Stalking another ex girlfriend, are you? Zip: I prefer to think of myself as a guardian angel. Lara: Anything interesting happening in the world? Zip: Not yet, but I’m working on it. Lara: What are you working on? Zip: Uh... my blog. I know, I know. Lara: Do I pay you to sit there and type all day? Zip: Yeah, actually, you do. Lara: Hmm. Zip: Hey, fire off a few rounds in the study while Alister’s in there reading. (Laughs) He hates the smell of cordite. Lara: How sad. Zip: Lara, go swing your grapple in the study in front of Alister, it drives him nuts. Lara: Careful Zip, I know what drives you nuts too. Zip: I hooked up the safe to the PC like you wanted, on the floor, there. Lara: Thanks. Lara: Oh Zip, your parole officer called... Zip: Not funny Lara, not funny. Lara: The national security of America keeps calling. Zip: It wasn't me, I didn’t do it. I was in Cleveland all weekend, yeh, ask my brother in-law. Lara: When do you work out Zip? I never see you leave this room. Zip: Typing is surprisingly strenuous. Lara: You'll get carpal tunnel if you keep on like that. Zip: You kidding? I thrive for repetitive stress. Don’t you? Lara: Ever consider taking up the piano? Zip: Naw, too many keys. Zip: I'm worried about Winston Lara. He hasn't left that spot for hours. Lara: Really Zip, and how would you know that? Zip: Uh... well, you know. Lara: Don't you get cold in here? You should put more clothes on. Zip: My digital babies like it cold, and you’re one to talk. (When Lara enters the library) Alister: You’re not going outside, are you? Lara: Not when there are still so many interesting dark places inside. (When Lara fires her guns in the library) Alister: Ack! Are you sure those bullets won’t bounce off that thing and put a premature end to my short and promising life? Lara: Hollow points, Alister – they practically drop straight to the floor. I did promise no repeats of that earlier incident, didn’t I? (When Lara pushes one bookcase onto a pressure pad) Alister: Your enthusiasm truly inspires me, Lara. Lara: Don’t be sarcastic, Alister. It’s dishonest. Alister: Hmmmmrph. (When Lara pushes both bookcases onto both pressure pads. A secret door opens.) Alister: I asked Winston to install a handle for you but he didn’t even offer the courtesy of a reply. Lara: He probably thought it was a rhetorical question. I would have. (The riddle for the gold Secret) Puzzle 01: Above the Waters, Twin Sisters turn their backs one upon the other to leave the Ambarges unguarded. Lara: Lovely. Puzzle 02: Within the Hall of Knowledge, Tomes of Cerulean, Topaz, Viridian, and Crimson in turn reveal their Arcanum. Lara: Splendid. Puzzles 03: Above the Hearth, revealed visage and countenance touched in haste raise up the Steward. Lara: What fun! |
